Ikan Platy: Platy Fish Care, Colours & Why They Suit Beginners in Malaysia
Ikan platy are small, peaceful livebearers that grow to about 5–6 cm, eat almost anything and cope well with Malaysian room temperatures. Keep a group of 4–6 in a 2-foot tank, treat tap water with anti klorin, add a little mineral buffer if your water is very soft, and expect babies within a few months. That is the short answer. The rest of this guide covers the colours sold in local shops, water, the "can platy live without an aerator" question and how to stop a tank from filling up with fry.
Platy fish (Xiphophorus maculatus and the variatus platy, X. variatus) come from Central America, but the platy in Malaysian shops are farm-bred, and Malaysia is a major ornamental-fish producer (Johor leads production). Locally bred fish are usually cheap, hardy and already used to warm local water.
Popular Platy Colours in Malaysian Shops
| Variety | What it looks like | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Red platy (ikan platy merah) | Solid tomato-red body | The classic; very hardy |
| Tuxedo platy (ikan platy tuxedo) | Coloured front, black rear half | Comes in red, yellow and blue tuxedo |
| Mickey Mouse platy | Three black dots at the tail base that look like a cartoon mouse head | Popular with kids |
| Sunset / variatus | Yellow-orange body, sometimes a red tail | Variatus types tolerate slightly cooler water |
| Wagtail | Light body, black fins | Striking against green plants |
| Salt-and-pepper / calico | Speckled black on white or orange | Pattern varies fish to fish |
| Blue coral / blue mirror | Metallic blue sheen | Colour shows best under good light |
| Hi-fin | Tall dorsal fin | Avoid keeping with fin-nippers |
Prices are in RM and vary mostly with variety, size and whether the fish are sold singly or as a pair or trio. Common colours are among the cheapest livestock you can buy.

Platy Care in Warm, Soft Malaysian Tap Water
Temperature
Platy are not heat-lovers like discus. They are happiest in the mid-20s, but they live well in typical Malaysian homes. The problem comes when a tank sits near a window and climbs past 31–32°C during a heatwave. Keep the tank out of direct sunlight and, if it runs very hot, use a kipas akuarium (cooling fan). See our guide to cooling an aquarium in Malaysia.
Soft water and pH
Like other livebearers, platy prefer harder, slightly alkaline water. Tap water in much of Malaysia is soft with low KH, so pH can drift downwards between water changes. Signs that the water is too soft include clamped fins, a "shimmy" swimming motion and poor colour. Easy fixes:
- Test KH and pH with a test kit before guessing.
- Add a small bag of crushed coral or a little coral sand to the filter.
- Do regular partial water changes (tukar air), about 25% a week, so pH never crashes.
- Always dose anti klorin first. Malaysian tap water is chlorinated and can carry up to 5 mg/L residual chlorine under the national standard. Our tap water and anti klorin guide explains why letting water stand (endap air) is not enough.
Some keepers add a pinch of aquarium salt for livebearers. It is not essential, and it harms many plants and scaleless tankmates, so skip it in a mixed community tank.
Can Ikan Platy Live Without an Aerator?
This is one of the most common questions locally (ikan platy tanpa aerator). The honest answer: sometimes, but it is not worth the risk in Malaysia.
Platy do not have a labyrinth organ like bettas and gouramis, so they rely fully on oxygen dissolved in the water. Warm water holds less oxygen, and Malaysian tanks often run at 28–31°C. A lightly stocked tank with live plants and a hang-on or top filter that ripples the surface can be fine without a separate air pump. A crowded tank, a bowl, or any tank during a heatwave or power cut is not.
Signs of low oxygen: platy hanging at the surface, gulping, or sitting near the filter outlet. A small pam udara (air pump) with an airstone is cheap insurance, and a battery-backup pump helps during TNB outages. Browse air pumps if you need one.
Feeding Platy
Platy are omnivores that graze on algae in the wild, so give them variety:
- Staple: good-quality flakes or micro pellets once or twice a day, only what they eat in 1–2 minutes.
- Greens: spirulina flakes or blanched cucumber or spinach once or twice a week.
- Treats: frozen bloodworm (cacing darah), daphnia or baby brine shrimp (artemia).
Overfeeding is the main cause of dirty water and sick fish in livebearer tanks. If you are unsure, feed less.
Tank Mates for Platy
Good companions in a 2–3 kaki community tank:
- Guppies, mollies and swordtails (other livebearers)
- Small rasboras and peaceful tetras
- Corydoras and small plecos such as bristlenose
- Cherry shrimp (adults are fine; platy will eat shrimp babies)
Avoid large cichlids, tiger barbs (fin-nippers) and any fish big enough to swallow a platy.
Breeding Control: Stopping the Population Explosion
Platy are livebearers. Females give birth to live fry roughly every 4–6 weeks, and a single mating can produce several broods, so a female bought alone may still give birth.
Keeping numbers under control
- Keep the ratio at 1 male to 2–3 females, so one female is not harassed.
- Keep all one sex if you really do not want babies. Males have a pointed anal fin (gonopodium); females have a fan-shaped one.
- Let nature work: in a tank with adult fish and few hiding places, most fry get eaten.
- Rehome extras through local hobbyist groups or a shop. Never release them.
If you want to raise fry
Use dense plants (java moss, floating plants) or a breeding box. Feed fry crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp several times a day. Our guppy care guide covers the same fry-rearing steps.
Jangan lepaskan ikan ke sungai. Unwanted platy should go back to a shop or another hobbyist. Releasing fish into drains and rivers harms native species, and the Department of Fisheries (DOF) reports around 80 established alien fish species in Malaysia.
Buying Platy on FishyHub
When you browse platy for sale or the wider small community fishes category:
- Check whether the photo is the actual fish or a representative image.
- Check if the fish are sold singly, as pairs or as sexed trios.
- Check the seller's location, delivery or self-collect options and live-arrival terms, and ask the seller if anything is unclear.
- Acclimatise new fish slowly, and quarantine them if you already have a stocked tank.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ikan platy makan apa?
Can platy live with guppies and bettas?
With guppies, yes; they share the same needs. With a betta, usually yes in a 2-foot tank, but watch for platy picking at long betta fins and remove the betta if it gets aggressive.
How many platy should I keep in a 2 kaki tank?
Start with 4–6 (one or two males, the rest females), leaving room for the fry that will almost certainly appear.
Why is my platy fat?
Either pregnant (a dark gravid spot near the anal fin, belly boxy at the front) or overfed. If the scales stick out like a pinecone, it may be dropsy, which is serious. See why aquarium fish die.
