Ikan Buntal Air Tawar: Pea Puffer Care & Snail Diet in Malaysia
The pea puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus), also called the dwarf puffer, is the smallest and most popular ikan buntal air tawar (freshwater puffer) in Malaysian shops. It grows to only about 2.5–3.5 cm, but it has a big personality and specific needs. Keep pea puffers in a species-only tank with lots of plants. Feed live snails and frozen foods, because most will not eat flakes or pellets. Give each fish room so they do not fight, and keep the water very clean. They do not need salt; pea puffers are true freshwater fish.
What Is a Pea Puffer?
Pea puffers come from rivers and backwaters in southwestern India (Kerala and Karnataka). The fish in Malaysian shops are either imported or locally bred. They are not related to the large marine puffers you might see at a fish market, but like other puffers they may carry toxins. Never eat any puffer, and wash your hands after handling them.
Malaysia has its own native freshwater puffers too. Carinotetraodon salivator, the striped red-eye puffer, is known only from a few rivers in Sarawak and is listed as Near Threatened. These are rare in the trade, and wild populations should be protected.
Pea Puffer Care Table
| Factor | What pea puffers need |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 24–29°C; fine in most Malaysian rooms with aeration |
| Tank | 1.5 kaki (~28 L) for one; 2 kaki (~55 L) for 3–5 |
| Water | Freshwater, pH 7–7.5, very clean, no salt needed |
| Temperament | Territorial and nippy, even towards each other |
| Diet | Carnivore: live snails, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp |
| Lifespan | About 4–5 years |
| Beginner? | Intermediate; feeding takes commitment |
Pea puffers in groups need lots of plants and broken sight lines. Males are usually more aggressive. A good mix is one male with two or three females.
Male vs female
- Males: a dark line along the belly, wrinkles behind the eyes, and often brighter yellow.
- Females: rounder, plainer, with more spotty patterns and no belly line.
Why Pea Puffers Need a Species-Only Tank
Pea puffers bite. They nip fins, chase slow fish and eat shrimp and snails. Common mistakes are putting them with bettas, guppies or cherry shrimp. Even fast fish like danios get stressed.
Some experienced keepers add fast, hardy bottom dwellers like otocinclus or kuhli loaches to large, heavily planted puffer tanks, but results vary. For most people, a puffer-only tank is safest.
Setting Up a Pea Puffer Tank
- Dense plants: java moss, java fern, anubias, Cryptocoryne, floating plants. Puffers feel safer and fight less with plenty of cover.
- Driftwood and stones to break up lines of sight.
- Gentle filtration: a sponge or hang-on filter with low flow. Pea puffers are weak swimmers.
- Cycle the tank first. Puffers are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite.
- Lid to stop jumping and slow evaporation.

Water and Temperature in Malaysia
- Anti klorin is a must. Malaysian tap water is chlorinated, and leaving it to stand (endap air) does not remove chloramine. See our tap water guide.
- Weekly water changes of 25–30%. Puffers are messy eaters, and leftover food and snail shells rot quickly.
- Soft water: much of Malaysia's tap water is soft with low KH. Pea puffers prefer around neutral pH. Test KH and pH; if pH drops too low, add a little buffer such as crushed coral in the filter.
- Heat: above 31°C, add aeration. Warm water holds less oxygen.
Feeding: Ikan Puffer Makan Apa?
This is where pea puffers differ from most aquarium fish.
Snails
Snails are the most natural food and help keep puffer teeth short. Puffer teeth are fused into a beak that keeps growing; crunching snail shells wears it down.
- Small pest snails (bladder, ramshorn, Malaysian trumpet snails) are ideal.
- Many keepers breed snails in a separate tub to have a steady supply. Feed the snails vegetables or fish food.
- Do not feed snails larger than the puffer's head.
You can find snails on FishyHub to start a snail culture.
Frozen foods
- Frozen bloodworm (cacing darah): the most common staple.
- Frozen brine shrimp and mysis.
- Daphnia for variety.
See frozen foods. Thaw portions in a little tank water before feeding.
Live foods
Blackworms, grindal worms, mosquito larvae and baby brine shrimp are eagerly eaten. Use clean sources to avoid diseases.
How often
Feed once or twice a day, a small amount each time. Remove leftovers. A healthy pea puffer has a slightly rounded belly, not a sunken one.
Overgrown teeth
If the beak grows too long, a puffer struggles to eat. Signs include a visible beak and weight loss. More snails usually fixes this. Severe cases may need trimming by an experienced keeper or vet.
Brackish Puffers Sold Locally
Some "ikan buntal" sold in Malaysian shops are brackish puffers, not true freshwater fish. Examples include:
- Green spotted puffer: grows to about 15 cm, becomes aggressive, and needs brackish water that becomes more salty as it matures. It is found in estuaries in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia.
- Figure-8 puffer: smaller, about 8 cm, prefers low-end brackish water.
These are sometimes sold as freshwater fish, but they do poorly long term without the right salinity. Ask the seller whether the puffer is freshwater or brackish, and check its adult size before you buy.
Common Problems
- Fin-nipping in groups: add more plants and reduce the number of males.
- Sunken belly: underfeeding or internal parasites. Check feeding first.
- White spot: puffers are sensitive to some medications; check the label and treat carefully. See our white spot guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ikan puffer air tawar makan apa?
Do pea puffers need salt?
No. Pea puffers are freshwater fish. Brackish puffers, such as the green spotted puffer, are different and need brackish water.
How many pea puffers can I keep in a 2 kaki tank?
About 3–5, in a heavily planted tank. Use one male with two or three females.
Are pea puffers poisonous?
Puffers can carry toxins, so never eat them, and wash your hands after handling them. They are not dangerous to touch in normal aquarium care.
Pea puffers are tiny fish with huge character. Browse puffers, snails and frozen foods from Malaysian sellers on FishyHub, and read why aquarium fish die if you run into trouble.
