Ikan Emas Oranda: Oranda Goldfish Care, Wen Growth & Common Problems

The ikan emas oranda is the goldfish with the bubbly "hood" on its head, called the wen. To keep one well in Malaysia you need clean, well-oxygenated water (the wen picks up infections easily in warm, dirty tanks), a diet rich enough to grow the hood, and patience: a good wen takes one to two years to develop. This guide covers oranda goldfish care from a Malaysian angle, including heat, tap water and what you are paying for when prices jump from a few ringgit to several hundred.

Oranda at a Glance

Need Recommendation
Adult size Commonly 15–20 cm including tail; large show fish can be bigger
Tank 2 kaki deep or 3 kaki for 2–3 orandas; depth helps posture
Temperature Ideally below about 28°C; manage Malaysian heat with aeration and a fan
Water Treated tap water, 30–50% weekly water change, strong filtration
Diet Quality sinking pellets or gel, some protein, greens
Tank mates Other slow fancy goldfish (ryukin, ranchu); no fast or nippy fish
Difficulty Beginner to intermediate

How the Oranda Wen Grows

The wen is a fleshy growth of skin tissue on the head and gill covers. On young fish it may be just a slight bump. It usually starts showing clearly within the first year, and it keeps filling out for two years or more. How big it gets depends mainly on:

  • Genetics. The parents matter most. A fish from a weak-headed line will never grow a show-grade hood, however well you feed it.
  • Space and water quality. Fish that grow steadily in large, clean tanks develop better wens than stunted fish in small tanks.
  • Diet. Protein supports growth. Many keepers feed a staple pellet plus treats such as cacing darah (bloodworm) or artemia a few times a week.
  • Temperature. Warm water speeds metabolism and appetite. That can help growth, but it also means more waste, so you need more filtration and water changes, not just more food.

When the wen covers the eyes

On some heavily hooded orandas the wen grows over the eyes and the fish struggles to find food. Feed slowly so it can locate pellets. Wen trimming is sometimes done by experienced breeders, but it carries infection risk and is not a beginner job; ask an experienced keeper or vet rather than trying it yourself.

Oranda Goldfish Care in Malaysian Conditions

Everything in our main goldfish care guide applies to orandas. The points below matter most for this variety.

Oxygen and heat

Orandas are round-bodied and not strong swimmers. In a 30°C tank they tire quickly if oxygen is low. Run an air pump around the clock, keep the tank away from direct sun and use a cooling fan in hot rooms. The cooling guide explains when a fan is enough and when a chiller makes sense.

Gentle filtration

Orandas need lots of filtration but little current. A top filter or canister with the outflow spread across the surface works well. If the fish is constantly pushed to one corner, the flow is too strong.

Tap water

Use anti klorin every time. Malaysian tap water is often soft with low KH, which lets pH drop between water changes. Orandas prefer neutral to slightly alkaline water. A test kit helps you catch a falling pH before it stresses the fish.

Feeding Oranda for Growth and Colour

Food How often Why
Sinking goldfish pellet or gel Daily, 1–2 small meals Staple, less air gulping than floating flakes
Colour-enhancing pellet Mix in a few times a week Contains pigments such as astaxanthin for red
Bloodworm / artemia 2–3 times a week Protein for wen and body growth
Blanched peas, spinach Once or twice a week Fibre, helps prevent constipation

Find suitable options under food for goldfish. Feed only what is eaten in about a minute. Overfeeding to "grow the wen faster" mostly grows algae and bacteria.

Common Oranda Problems

Swim bladder trouble

Round-bodied fancies often float tail-up, sink, or tip sideways after meals. Common triggers are overfeeding, gulping air with floating food, constipation and poor water. First steps: fast for two to three days, then feed sinking food and greens in smaller amounts. If it keeps happening, keep the water slightly shallower so the fish doesn't fight the depth.

Wen infections

The folds of the wen trap debris. In warm water with high organic load, bacteria and fungus can take hold. Watch for:

  • White, cottony patches or a dull, peeling area on the hood
  • Red, raw spots or holes in the wen
  • The fish rubbing its head against decor

The cure starts with the water: more frequent water changes, clean the filter sponge gently in tank water, and cut feeding. For a fish that is clearly infected, move it to a hospital tank and use an appropriate ubat ikan from our medication section, following the label dose for the tank's real water volume.

White spot and fin damage

White spot shows as salt-like dots; the treatment approach is in our white spot guide. Ragged, red-edged fins usually point to water quality.

Harga Ikan Emas Oranda: What Drives Price

Oranda prices in RM range widely. We won't quote numbers because they change by seller and size, but these are the factors that push a fish up the price list:

  1. Wen size and shape. A full, even hood that covers the head (but not the eyes) is the main selling point.
  2. Colour pattern. Red cap (white body with a red hood), calico, chocolate, panda and blue are often priced above plain red or orange.
  3. Body shape. Short, deep, round body with a straight back and symmetrical tail.
  4. Size and age. Larger, older fish with mature wens cost more because the seller has raised them longer.
  5. Line and origin. Fish from well-known breeding lines, local or imported, sell at a premium.

When you browse oranda goldfish listings, check whether photos show the actual fish or a representative one, the stated size, and delivery or self-collect options. Ask the seller for a video if you're paying for wen quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Berapa lama wen ikan oranda tumbuh?

Wen biasanya mula kelihatan dalam tahun pertama dan terus membesar selama dua tahun atau lebih. Saiz akhirnya banyak bergantung pada baka, ruang akuarium, kualiti air dan makanan.

Ikan emas oranda makan apa?

Pelet ikan emas jenis tenggelam atau makanan gel sebagai makanan utama, ditambah cacing darah atau artemia beberapa kali seminggu, serta kacang pea atau sayur yang direbus sekali-sekala. Jangan beri makan terlalu banyak.

Can oranda live with other goldfish?

Yes, with other slow fancy types such as ryukin, ranchu and pearlscale. Avoid fast single-tail goldfish (comet, wakin) that outcompete them at feeding time.

Why is my oranda's wen turning white?

White patches on the wen can be normal colour change in young fish, but cottony or peeling white areas suggest infection. Check water quality first and quarantine the fish if it worsens.

Do orandas need a big tank?

Yes. Plan on about 25–30 litres of real water per adult, which means a 2-kaki tank for two and a 3-kaki tank for a small group.
