Air Akuarium Berminyak: How to Remove Oily Film on the Aquarium Water Surface

If your air akuarium berminyak (the water looks oily, with a rainbow sheen or a dull, wrinkled skin on top), you're looking at surface film: a thin layer of proteins, fats and bacteria (biofilm permukaan air) that collects where the water meets the air. It forms when the surface is too still. The fix is to blot it off with a paper towel today, then add surface agitation or a surface skimmer so it can't build up again, and to cut back oily food. It's rarely dangerous on its own, but it does reduce oxygen exchange, which matters in warm Malaysian tanks.

What Is the Oily Film on My Aquarium?

Surface film is a mix of:

  • Proteins and fats from fish food, especially oily pellets, frozen food and home-made food
  • Bacteria and biofilm that feed on those compounds and form a skin
  • Plant and fish waste, including oils from decaying leaves
  • Outside contamination: hand lotion, cooking oil mist from a nearby kitchen, aerosol sprays or insect spray

The film gathers on the surface because these compounds float. In a tank with good surface movement they get broken up and pulled into the filter. In a still tank they just sit there.

How to tell it apart from other surface problems

Why Air Akuarium Berminyak Happens in Malaysian Tanks

Some conditions common here make surface film more likely:

  1. Gentle or no surface flow. Betta tanks, shrimp tanks and planted tanks often have low flow by design.
  2. Warm water. At 28–31°C, bacteria multiply quickly, and food breaks down faster.
  3. Heavy feeding. Oily pellets, beef heart mixes and frozen cacing darah (bloodworm) release fats.
  4. Lids and covers. A closed lid reduces air movement over the water and traps dust.
  5. Tanks near the kitchen. In many Malaysian homes, the living room is open to the kitchen, so cooking oil mist can settle on the water.
  6. Spray products. Insect spray or air freshener used near an open-top tank can leave a film, and some are toxic to fish.

Is Surface Film Harmful?

Mostly it's a warning sign rather than a direct poison, but it does have effects:

  • Less oxygen exchange. Oxygen enters and CO2 leaves at the surface. A film slows this. Warm water already holds less oxygen, so fish may start gasping at the top. See why fish gasp at the surface.
  • Less light reaches plants if the film is thick.
  • Fry and labyrinth fish such as bettas and gouramis gulp air at the surface, and a heavy film can make that harder for young fry.
  • It points to excess organics, which can also mean rising ammonia or nitrate.

If you suspect spray or chemical contamination, do a 30–50% water change with dechlorinated water at once and run activated carbon.

How to Remove It Today

1. Paper towel blot

Lay a clean, unscented paper towel flat on the surface for a second, then lift it off. The film sticks to the towel. Repeat two or three times. This is the quickest fix.

2. Cup skim

Gently scoop the top layer of water off with a clean cup or jug, then top up with treated water.

3. Water change

A 20–30% water change, done while you skim off the top layer first, removes the film and the dissolved organics feeding it.

How to Stop It Coming Back

Increase surface agitation

The single best fix. Options include:

  • Point the filter outlet or spray bar slightly upward so it ripples the surface.
  • Lower the water level a little so the outflow of a hang-on or top filter splashes.
  • Add an airstone or sponge filter run by a pam udara. See our air pump guide.
  • Use a small water jet or circulation pump aimed across the surface. FishyHub sellers list these under Water Jets.

For bettas and shrimp, aim for a gentle ripple, not a current that pushes fish around.

Use a surface skimmer

A surface skimmer is a small intake that sits at the waterline and pulls the top layer into the filter. Some run on their own small pump, and others attach to the intake of a canister filter. They are the standard fix in planted tanks where you want calm water and CO2. Look for them under Filter Accessories.

If you have a canister filter, make sure the skimmer's flow doesn't starve the main intake.

Feed less, and feed less oily food

  • Feed only what fish finish in about 2 minutes.
  • Thaw and rinse frozen food in a small net before feeding.
  • Rotate oily foods with lean pellets or flakes.
  • Remove uneaten food after a few minutes.

Keep the filter healthy

A clogged filter moves less water and lets organics build up. Rinse mechanical media in tank water when flow drops. More detail: how to clean an aquarium filter.

Protect the tank from outside oils

  • Wash and rinse hands well before putting them in the tank. Lotion and soap leave residue.
  • Use a lid or cover if the tank is near the kitchen, but leave a gap for air exchange.
  • Never spray insecticide or air freshener near the tank.

Quick Action Checklist

Step When Why
Blot film with paper towel Now Removes the layer immediately
20–30% water change Today Lowers dissolved organics
Adjust outlet for surface ripple Today Breaks up film continuously
Add skimmer or airstone This week Long-term prevention
Cut feeding and rinse frozen food Ongoing Removes the source
Clean mechanical media When flow drops Keeps circulation strong

Frequently Asked Questions

Kenapa air akuarium berminyak?

What does a surface skimmer do?

It draws in water from the very top layer, where oily film collects, and sends it through a filter. It keeps the surface clear without needing strong currents.

Will the film come back after I remove it?

Yes, if the cause stays. Increase surface movement and reduce oily food, and it usually stops forming within a week or two.

Can a betta bubble nest look like surface film?

A bubble nest is a raft of small bubbles, usually in one spot, made by a male betta. Surface film is a flat, oily skin across the surface. Leave a bubble nest alone. It's a normal sign that the betta is comfortable.

Keep the surface moving with filter accessories and surface skimmers, water jets and air pumps from Malaysian sellers on FishyHub. Compare listings and RM prices, and ask the seller about flow rates for your tank size.
