Cara Setup Akuarium untuk Pemula: Step-by-Step First Tank in Malaysia

Here is cara setup akuarium the right way: buy a 2 kaki tank set, place it out of direct sunlight on a level stand, add washed substrate and decor, fill with tap water treated with anti klorin, run the filter for 3–4 weeks to cycle the tank, then add a few hardy fish at a time. The step people skip is the cycle, and it's the main reason new fish die in the first month. Below is a day-by-day plan and a Malaysian shopping list.

Malaysian Beginner Shopping List

Item Why you need it Tip
Tank (2 kaki recommended) Big enough to be stable, small enough to manage A tank set often includes light and filter
Stand or cabinet A full 2 kaki tank weighs about 70–80 kg Must be level and strong
Filter Houses the good bacteria that break down waste Aim for 4–6× tank volume per hour
Light (LED) For viewing and live plants Use a timer for 6–8 hours
Substrate Sand, gravel or aqua soil Sand for bottom-dwellers, gravel for goldfish
Anti klorin (water conditioner) Malaysian tap water is chlorinated Treat every bucket of new water
Test kit Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH Liquid kits are more accurate than strips
Air pump (pam udara) Extra oxygen in warm water and during power cuts A battery backup pump is useful
Bacteria starter Speeds up cycling Optional but helpful
Net, siphon, bucket For maintenance Keep a bucket only for the aquarium
Thermometer Check heat in hot months Heaters are rarely needed in Malaysia
Fish food Small, good-quality flakes or pellets Buy after the cycle

Many sellers offer complete aquarium tank sets, which is the easiest way to start. Not sure which size? Read our tank size guide.

Where to Put Your Aquarium

Placement is hard to fix later, so get it right first.

  • No direct sunlight. Sun on the glass causes green water and can push a tank past 32°C on hot afternoons.
  • Away from aircond vents, windows and the kitchen. Temperature swings and cooking fumes stress fish.
  • Near a power point with a drip loop in each cable (let the cable dip below the socket so water can't run into it).
  • On a level, strong stand on a solid floor. Water weighs 1 kg per litre.
  • Somewhere you'll see it daily, so you notice problems early.
  • Leave space above and behind for maintenance and the filter.

Cara Setup Akuarium: Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1: Set up the hardware

  1. Wipe the tank with a damp cloth. No soap or detergent.
  2. Place the stand and tank, and check they're level.
  3. Rinse gravel or sand until the water runs clear (don't rinse aqua soil).
  4. Add the substrate, sloping slightly higher at the back.
  5. Add rocks, wood and decor. Soak driftwood first so it sinks.
  6. Fill slowly, pouring onto a plate or bag so substrate isn't disturbed.
  7. Add anti klorin for the full volume. Our tap water guide explains why.
  8. Install the filter and air pump, then switch them on. Set the light timer.

Day 1–2: Add plants

If you're using live plants, add them now. Easy species like anubias, java fern and crypts help the tank mature. Live plants also compete with algae.

Day 2: Start the cycle

Add a bacteria starter and a small "ammonia source": a pinch of fish food every day or two, or a measured dose of pure ammonia if you know how. This feeds the bacteria before fish arrive.

Week 1–3: Let it cycle

Bacteria grow in the filter and convert toxic ammonia to nitrite, then to less harmful nitrate. Test every few days:

Stage Ammonia Nitrite Nitrate
Start Rising 0 0
Middle Falling Rising Starting
Cycled 0 0 Present

In warm Malaysian water this often takes 2–4 weeks, sometimes less with a good bacteria starter.

Week 3–4: First fish

When ammonia and nitrite both read 0 for several days, do a 30–50% water change and add 3–6 hardy fish (guppies, platies, a betta, or a small school of rasboras). Feed lightly.

Week 5 onwards: Add more gradually

Add a few more fish every week or two, testing in between. See our stocking guide for how many your tank can hold.

Choosing Your First Fish

Fish Why it's good for beginners
Guppy, platy, molly Hardy, colourful, Malaysian-bred
Betta (ikan laga) One per tank, easy in a 1–2 kaki tank
Harlequin or other rasboras Peaceful schooling fish
Corydoras Bottom-dwellers that clean up leftover food
Bristlenose pleco Small algae eater for 2 kaki and up

Stick to peaceful, hardy species for the first few months.

Acclimatising New Fish

  1. Float the sealed bag in the tank for 15–20 minutes so temperatures match.
  2. Open the bag and add a little tank water every 5 minutes, three or four times.
  3. Net the fish into the tank. Don't pour the shop water in.
  4. Keep the light off for a few hours and don't feed until the next day.

Weekly Maintenance Routine

  • Feed once or twice a day, only what's eaten in 2 minutes.
  • Change 20–30% of the water weekly with treated tap water at a similar temperature.
  • Siphon the substrate in sections.
  • Rinse filter sponges in old tank water, never under the tap, and not at the same time as a big clean.
  • Wipe the glass with an algae scraper.
  • Check temperature in hot months; above about 31°C, add a fan or more aeration.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  1. Adding fish on day one ("new tank syndrome").
  2. Skipping anti klorin.
  3. Overfeeding: leftover food becomes ammonia.
  4. Too many fish too fast.
  5. Washing the filter in tap water, which kills the good bacteria.
  6. Placing the tank in sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size tank is best for a beginner?

A 2 kaki (about 55–65 L) tank. Small tanks look easier but change temperature and water quality faster.

Do I need a heater in Malaysia?

Usually not. Indoor tanks sit around 26–31°C. Heaters are mainly for discus, hospital tanks or rooms with the aircond on for long periods.

How often should I change the water?

About 20–30% once a week for most tanks. Heavily stocked or goldfish tanks may need more.
