Penyakit Ikan Emas: Goldfish Diseases & Treatment Guide for Malaysia
The most common penyakit ikan emas (goldfish diseases) in Malaysian homes are swim bladder problems, white spot, flukes, fin rot, wen (head growth) infections on orandas, ammonia burns and dropsy. Most are triggered by the same things: a small, overstocked tank, warm water with too little oxygen, and too much food. Goldfish are messy, heavy eaters, and in our 26–31°C rooms their tanks foul fast. So the first step for nearly any sick goldfish is the same: test the water, do a water change, add aeration, then treat the specific problem.
Why Goldfish Struggle in Malaysian Tanks
Goldfish (fancy varieties such as oranda, ranchu and ryukin) are sub-tropical fish. They manage our room temperatures, but warm water creates extra pressure:
- Less oxygen: water at 30°C holds noticeably less oxygen than at 22°C, while goldfish need plenty of it.
- Faster waste build-up: goldfish produce a lot of ammonia, and warm water speeds up bacterial growth.
- Faster parasite cycles: white spot and flukes multiply quickly in warm water.
- Small tanks: a goldfish bowl or tiny tank is the most common cause of illness.
A 2 kaki tank (about 55–65 L) is a sensible minimum for a pair of fancy goldfish. See the goldfish care guide for the full setup.
Penyakit Ikan Emas: Goldfish Symptom Table
| Symptom | Likely problem | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Floating upside down, stuck at the bottom, or tilting | Swim bladder disorder | Fast 1–2 days, then feed sinking, soaked foods |
| White salt-like dots | White spot (ich) | Treat the whole tank |
| Rubbing, flashing, fast gills, clamped fins | Flukes or other parasites | Anti-parasite treatment |
| Frayed fins with white or red edges | Fin rot | Water change, then antibacterial |
| White or red, swollen patches on the wen (head growth) | Wen infection | Clean water, antibacterial treatment |
| Black patches on body or fins | Healing ammonia burns | Find and fix the ammonia source |
| Red streaks in fins | Poor water, early infection | Test water; water change |
| Raised scales, swollen belly (sisik nanas) | Dropsy, usually internal infection | Isolate; see our dropsy guide |
| Gasping at the surface | Low oxygen, ammonia | Aerate and change water now |
| Cotton-like tufts | Fungus | Antifungal treatment |
| Small white bumps only on gill plates and front fins of males | Breeding tubercles (normal) | No treatment |
Swim Bladder Problems (Ikan Emas Terbalik)
Round-bodied fancy goldfish like ryukin and oranda are prone to swim bladder issues because their organs are compressed.
Causes: overfeeding, gulping air with floating pellets, constipation, low-quality food, sudden temperature changes, or infection.
What to do:
- Stop feeding for 1–2 days.
- Then feed small amounts of sinking pellets that have been soaked first, or blanched, peeled peas.
- Keep water clean and avoid sudden temperature swings.
- If the fish stays upside down for more than a week, an internal infection may be involved.

Wen Infections on Oranda
The wen is the fleshy head growth on orandas and lionheads. Its folds trap dirt and bacteria.
- Signs: white, cottony or red spots on the wen, swelling, pieces falling off.
- Causes: poor water, high organic waste, injury from décor.
- Treatment: clean water and frequent water changes, plus an antibacterial treatment suitable for goldfish. Remove sharp décor.
Parasites: White Spot and Flukes
- White spot: clear white dots. In warm Malaysian water, treatment usually works within a week or two. Full method in our white spot guide.
- Flukes: not visible to the eye. Watch for rubbing, flashing and fast breathing. Use an anti-parasite medicine dosed by tank volume.
Both are commonly introduced by new fish, so quarantine new goldfish for 2–4 weeks.
Ammonia Burns
Black patches, red gills and frayed fins after a period of poor water usually mean ammonia damage. The black patches are often healing tissue, appearing after the water improves.
- Test ammonia and nitrite.
- Do larger, more frequent water changes with anti klorin.
- Reduce feeding.
- Upgrade the filter if needed.
Ubat Ikan Emas: Choosing a Treatment
| Problem | Type of treatment |
|---|---|
| White spot | Anti-white spot medicine, sometimes with aquarium salt |
| Flukes | Anti-parasite treatment (follow label) |
| Fin rot, wen infection, red streaks | Antibacterial treatment |
| Fungus | Antifungal treatment; methylene blue is a common option |
| Mild stress after water problems | Aquarium salt at a low dose, plus clean water |
Tips:
- Dose by actual water volume, not the tank's nominal size.
- Remove activated carbon during treatment.
- Add an air stone, as many medicines reduce oxygen.
- Don't mix medicines unless the label allows it.
Find treatments on the ubat ikan (medication) page, and see our methylene blue (ubat biru) guide for a common fungus and wound remedy.
Prevention: The Goldfish Basics
- Big enough tank: 2 kaki for a pair, larger for more.
- Strong filtration and aeration: goldfish need both. An air pump is essential in our heat.
- Weekly water changes of 25–50% with anti klorin.
- Feed small amounts once or twice a day; soak dry pellets.
- Keep out of direct sunlight and away from hot walls.
- Quarantine new fish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Kenapa ikan emas saya terbalik?
Why do my goldfish keep getting sick? The usual cause is a small, overstocked tank with too little filtration. Bigger tanks, more water changes and less food fix most repeat problems.
Are black spots on goldfish a disease? Often they're healing ammonia burns, or natural colour change. If they appear after water problems and the fish is active, focus on keeping water clean.
Can goldfish live without an air pump in Malaysia? It's risky. Warm water holds less oxygen, and goldfish need a lot of it. An air pump and good surface movement are strongly recommended.
