Udang Hiasan Akuarium: Freshwater Shrimp Types for Malaysian Tanks
The best udang hiasan akuarium (ornamental aquarium shrimp) for most Malaysian homes is the Neocaridina group, which includes cherry, yellow, blue and orange shrimp. They handle warm room temperatures and a wide range of water. Amano and bamboo shrimp are also heat-tolerant and useful. Caridina shrimp such as crystal red (CRS) and Taiwan bee are the most beautiful but need cool, soft water around 20–24°C, which in Malaysia usually means a chiller. The table below compares them side by side, and the sections that follow explain what each type needs.
Udang Hiasan Akuarium at a Glance
| Shrimp | Group | Size | Comfortable temperature | Copes with 28–31°C? | Water | Breeds in freshwater? | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cherry / sakura / fire red | Neocaridina | 2–3 cm | About 20–28°C | Yes, with good oxygen; stress above about 30°C | Wide range; prefers some GH | Yes | Easy |
| Yellow, blue dream, orange, chocolate | Neocaridina | 2–3 cm | Same as cherry | Yes, as above | Same as cherry | Yes | Easy |
| Crystal red / crystal black (CRS/CBS) | Caridina | 2–2.5 cm | About 20–24°C | No: needs a chiller | Soft, acidic; active soil | Yes | Hard |
| Taiwan bee, tiger, other bee shrimp | Caridina | 2–3 cm | About 20–25°C | Mostly no | Soft, acidic | Yes | Medium–hard |
| Amano shrimp | Caridina multidentata | 4–5 cm | About 20–28°C | Generally yes | Wide range | No: larvae need brackish water | Easy |
| Bamboo shrimp | Atyopsis | 6–8 cm | About 23–29°C | Generally yes | Needs strong flow | Rarely in tanks | Medium |
| Ghost / glass shrimp | Various | 3–5 cm | Warm | Yes | Wide range | Some types | Easy; can eat tiny shrimplets |
Temperatures are hobby guidelines. Heat tolerance depends on oxygen, so an air pump matters in Malaysian tanks.
Neocaridina: The Easiest Udang Hiasan Air Tawar
Neocaridina davidi is the shrimp most Malaysian beginners start with. Selective breeding has produced many colours:
- Red: cherry, sakura, fire red, painted fire red
- Yellow: yellow, golden back yellow
- Blue: blue dream, blue velvet
- Others: orange, chocolate, black rose, green jade, rili patterns
All colours have the same care needs. They breed readily, graze biofilm and algae all day and are safe with plants. Don't mix colours if you want to keep the line pure, because mixed colours breed back to brownish wild-type shrimp.

Caridina: Beautiful but Demanding
Crystal red, crystal black, Taiwan bee (blue bolt, king kong, shadow panda), tiger and other bee shrimp are prized for patterns and grading. They need:
- Cool water, about 20–24°C. In most Malaysian rooms this means a chiller, or at least an air-conditioned room plus fans.
- Soft, acidic water with pH around 6 or slightly below and very low KH. Most keepers use RO water remineralised with a Caridina GH-only mineral, over active aquasoil.
- Very stable conditions. Sudden changes kill them.
Malaysia's soft tap water is closer to what Caridina need than hard water would be, but heat and chlorine still rule out most untreated tap setups. Browse Caridina shrimp and see our crystal red shrimp guide.
Amano Shrimp: The Algae Specialist
Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) are bigger, tougher algae eaters, popular in planted aquascapes for cleaning hair algae and leftovers.
- Copes with normal Malaysian room temperatures and a wide range of water.
- Females carry eggs, but the larvae need brackish water to develop, so Amanos almost never breed in a freshwater tank. Most are bred commercially or wild-collected.
- Larger than Neocaridina, so they are safer with small community fish.
- They can grab food from slower tankmates.
Bamboo Shrimp: The Filter Feeder
Bamboo shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis), sometimes called wood shrimp, come from Southeast Asia, so they are naturally comfortable in warm water. Instead of claws they have feathery fans that catch particles from the current.
- Needs flow: place it near the filter outlet or a powerhead, on driftwood or rock where it can "fish" the current.
- Can starve in a very clean, low-flow tank. Supplement with fine powdered food stirred into the current.
- Peaceful with everything, including fish and other shrimp.
Ghost and Glass Shrimp: Check What You're Buying
"Ghost shrimp" is a loose name for several transparent species. Some are harmless scavengers; some Macrobrachium-type shrimp grow larger, have long claws and will eat shrimplets and small fish. Ask the seller which species it is, and don't mix them with cherry shrimp colonies unless you're sure.
Water Needs in Malaysia
- Always use anti klorin. Shrimp are very sensitive to chlorine and to copper, which appears in some fish medicines. See our tap water guide.
- Soft water and low GH can cause failed moults. Neocaridina benefit from a mineral supplement that raises GH a little. Test GH, KH and pH with a water test kit.
- Heat plus low oxygen kills shrimp. Run an air pump or sponge filter, keep tanks out of direct sun, and add a fan in hot months.
- Cycle first. Add shrimp only to a mature tank with biofilm, at least several weeks old.
Udang Hiasan Makan Apa?
Shrimp graze biofilm, algae and decaying leaves all day. Supplement with shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables and leaves like daun ketapang. Feed small amounts and remove leftovers within a few hours. Full details in our makanan udang hiasan guide.
Tankmates
| Safe | Risky | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Otocinclus, small rasboras (including chili rasbora), snails | Guppies, small tetras and bettas (eat shrimplets; some bettas hunt adults) | Large cichlids, goldfish, loaches, puffers, anything big enough to swallow a shrimp |
A shrimp-only tank gives the best colony growth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a chiller for aquarium shrimp?
For Neocaridina, Amano and bamboo shrimp, usually not, as long as the tank is shaded and well aerated. For Caridina such as crystal red shrimp, a chiller is usually needed in Malaysia.
Why do my shrimp keep dying after a water change?
Common causes are chlorine (no anti klorin), a big change in temperature or hardness, or copper from medication. Do smaller, slower water changes with dechlorinated water.
Can different shrimp colours be mixed?
Neocaridina colours can interbreed, so mixed colours eventually produce dull offspring. Neocaridina and Caridina generally don't interbreed, but they need different water, so they rarely suit the same tank.
