Ubat Ikan Sakit: Building a Fish First-Aid Kit for Malaysian Hobbyists

When a fish gets sick, the clock is ticking, especially in warm Malaysian water where diseases move fast. The best ubat ikan sakit is the one you already have at home when you need it. A simple first-aid kit costs less than replacing a tank of fish, and it lets you act the same evening instead of waiting for a shop to open or a parcel to arrive. This guide lists what to keep, which type of medicine treats what, and how to use them without making things worse.

Rule One: Test Before You Treat

Most "sick fish" problems in home aquariums start with water quality, not germs. Ammonia, nitrite, chlorine from untreated air paip or a big pH swing can make fish clamp fins, gasp and lose colour, and no medicine fixes that. So the first item in any kit is a test kit, and the first step in any illness is a water check and a water change.

Our kenapa ikan mati guide walks through the full checklist.

Ubat Ikan Sakit: The Malaysian Fish First-Aid Kit

Item What it's for Notes
Water test kit (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, KH) Finding the real cause Liquid kits are more accurate than strips. See water test kits
Anti klorin / water conditioner Safe water for changes You'll use more during treatment
Garam ikan (aquarium salt) Stress, slime coat, nitrite, some parasites Not for sensitive fish, shrimp or plants
Ubat biru (methylene blue) Egg fungus, mild fungus, nitrite first aid Stains; use in a separate container
Antiparasitic medicine White spot, velvet, some flukes and skin parasites Check the label for target parasites
Antibacterial medicine Fin rot, ulcers, some internal infections Use only when signs point to bacteria
Antifungal medicine Cotton-wool fungus Many products combine antifungal and antibacterial
Epsom salt (plain magnesium sulfate) Swelling, constipation, pop eye support Not the same as aquarium salt
Spare container or small tank Hospital / quarantine tank A plastic tub with a lid works
Sponge filter or air stone + air pump Oxygen and gentle filtration in the hospital tank Many medicines lower oxygen
Thermometer Matching temperature Important for water changes
Soft net, measuring cup, syringe or dropper Accurate dosing and gentle handling Keep separate ones for the hospital tank
Notebook Record dose, date and what you saw Helps when asking for advice

You'll find medicines in FishyHub's medication section and conditioners and salt in water conditioners and additives.

Jenis Ubat Ikan: Types of Fish Medicine

Brands differ, but most fish medicines in Malaysian shops fall into a few groups. Read the active ingredient, not just the picture on the box.

Antiparasitic

Targets white spot, velvet and other external parasites. Common ingredients include malachite green, formalin and copper. Some also target worms or flukes (often with praziquantel). Copper and malachite green are harmful to shrimp and snails. See our guides on white spot and penyakit insang ikan (gill flukes).

Antibacterial

For fin rot, red sores, ulcers, cloudy eyes from infection, and columnaris-type white patches. Some are for external use, others are labelled for internal infections. Bacterial medicine can affect your filter's good bacteria, so a hospital tank is safer.

Antifungal

For true fungus: fluffy white tufts on wounds or eggs. See kulat pada ikan.

Salt and methylene blue

Gentle, broad first-aid tools. They support fish while you figure out what's wrong, and treat some mild problems by themselves.

Water conditioners with slime-coat support

Some anti klorin products include ingredients that support the fish's protective slime. Handy after injuries or transport.

How to Use Ubat Ikan Properly

  1. Identify the problem as best you can. Take a clear photo and video. Note what changed recently.
  2. Test and change water first.
  3. Move the sick fish to a hospital tank if possible, especially for antibiotics or strong medicines.
  4. Calculate real water volume. A 2 kaki tank holds about 55 litres of actual water, not 65. Length × width × height in cm ÷ 1,000 gives litres, minus about 15% for substrate and the air gap.
  5. Remove activated carbon from the filter; it absorbs medicine.
  6. Add aeration, since warm water plus medicine means less oxygen.
  7. Follow the label exactly: dose, interval and how many days.
  8. Finish the course, even if fish look better.
  9. Don't mix medicines unless the labels say it's safe.
  10. Afterwards, do water changes and add fresh carbon to remove leftovers.

Sensitive Fish and Tankmates

  • Scaleless and small-scaled fish (corydoras, plecos, loaches, many catfish) are sensitive to many medicines and to salt. Labels often recommend half doses.
  • Shrimp and snails die from copper and many antiparasitics. Move them first.
  • Live plants may be harmed by salt and some medicines.
  • Fry are more sensitive than adults.

Quarantine: The Cheapest Medicine

Most outbreaks start with a new fish. Keeping new arrivals in a separate tank for 2–4 weeks lets you spot and treat problems before they reach your main tank. The same container doubles as your hospital tank.

Storage Tips for a Hot Climate

  • Keep medicines in a cool, dark place, not on top of the tank or near a window. Heat and light break down many products.
  • Check expiry dates and replace old bottles.
  • Keep away from children and pets, and close caps tightly.
  • Don't store medicine in the kitchen next to food.

When to Ask for Help

If fish keep dying despite good water, the problem spreads fast, or you can't tell what it is, ask an experienced keeper or the seller, or look for a vet who treats fish. Send clear photos, test results and what you've already tried. Never release sick fish into drains or rivers.

FAQ

Can I use human medicine for fish?

It's not recommended. Doses, ingredients and how they behave in water are different. Use medicines made and labelled for aquarium fish, or get advice from a vet.

Should I add medicine to prevent disease?

No. Using medicine without a reason can harm filter bacteria and sensitive fish, and encourage resistant germs. Prevent disease with clean water, quarantine and good food instead.

Why did my fish die even after I used ubat ikan?

Common reasons are treating the wrong problem, poor water quality during treatment, overdosing, low oxygen, or starting too late. Test water, check the dose and add aeration next time.
