Kulat pada Ikan: Fish Fungus Treatment & Prevention

Kulat pada ikan (fish fungus) looks like white or grey cotton-wool tufts growing on a fish's body, fins, mouth or on eggs. True fungus almost never attacks a healthy fish. It grows on damaged skin, wounds or dead tissue, so treating it means two things at once: killing the fungus, and fixing whatever caused the wound or stress in the first place. Early cases usually clear up with clean water, garam ikan or ubat biru (methylene blue), and an antifungal ubat ikan when needed.

What Fish Fungus Looks Like

  • Fluffy, cotton-like growth, white, grey or slightly brown, that moves in the water
  • Usually on a spot where the fish was injured: torn fin, missing scale, bite mark
  • Sometimes after the fish already had white spot, fin rot or another illness
  • On eggs: white, furry eggs among clear, healthy ones

Most fish fungus is caused by water moulds such as Saprolegnia. They live in almost every tank and feed on dead organic matter, so they take the chance when skin is broken.

Fungus or Bacteria? (Important)

Many "fungus" cases are actually a bacterial infection called columnaris, which needs different treatment.

True fungus (kulat) Columnaris-type bacteria
Look Fluffy, cotton-wool tufts that wave in the water Flat white/grey patches, saddle-shaped mark on the back, "cotton mouth"
Texture Hair-like strands Slimy film, not fluffy
Speed Slow to moderate Can be very fast, killing fish in a day or two in warm water
Treatment Antifungal, methylene blue, salt Antibacterial medicine

Columnaris is common in warm water, so in Malaysian tanks at 28–31°C, take any fast-spreading white patch seriously. If you're unsure, ask the seller or an experienced keeper and send a clear photo.

White spot is different again: small separate dots, not tufts. See our white spot guide.

Why Fish Get Fungus

  • Injuries: fighting, nipping tankmates, rough netting, sharp decor
  • Poor water: high ammonia, nitrite and organic waste weaken skin
  • Rotting food or dead fish left in the tank feed fungus
  • Stress: transport, sudden temperature changes, overcrowding
  • Other diseases first: white spot, fin rot and parasites damage skin

How to Treat Kulat pada Ikan

1. Isolate and check the cause

Move the fish into a hospital tank if possible. Look for the cause: a bully, a sharp ornament, poor water.

2. Clean water

Do a water change with dechlorinated water. Test ammonia and nitrite with a water test kit. Remove uneaten food and any dead fish straight away.

3. Garam ikan (aquarium salt)

For salt-tolerant fish such as goldfish, ikan koi, livebearers and many bettas, a low dose of aquarium salt helps the slime coat and slows fungus. A common general level is about 1 g per litre, raised to about 2–3 g per litre for treatment in tolerant fish. Salt-sensitive fish (corydoras, plecos, loaches, many tetras) and live plants don't handle this well. See garam ikan untuk apa.

4. Ubat biru (methylene blue)

Methylene blue is a classic, gentle antifungal. It works well as a bath or in a hospital tank, but it stains silicone and decor and can harm the filter's good bacteria, so avoid using it in a planted display tank. Follow the dose on the bottle, since strength differs between brands. Our ubat biru guide explains how to use it safely.

5. Antifungal ubat ikan

For larger or stubborn patches, use a medicine labelled for fungus. Many combine antifungal and antibacterial ingredients. Find them under fish medication. Remove carbon from the filter during treatment.

6. Keep it up

Fungus may take a week or more to clear. The tufts fall away first, then the skin heals underneath. Keep the water very clean while it heals.

Egg Fungus

Fungus on fish eggs is very common, especially with angelfish (ikan manfish), bettas, goldfish and other egg-layers.

  • Infertile eggs turn white within a day and grow fungus, which then spreads to healthy eggs nearby.
  • Methylene blue is widely used in a hatching container to protect eggs. Add it at the label dose, enough to tint the water light blue.
  • Remove white eggs gently with a pipette or toothpick.
  • Gentle water movement from an air stone helps.
  • Some keepers use daun ketapang or almond leaves in betta breeding tanks for their mild tannins.

Keeping Wounds Clean and Preventing Fungus

  • Keep water quality high: regular water changes and a good filter. See cara tukar air akuarium.
  • Always dechlorinate with anti klorin and water conditioners. Some conditioners include slime-coat ingredients.
  • Avoid bad tankmate combinations: fin-nippers with long-finned fish, aggressive fish with timid ones.
  • Smooth decor, no sharp edges.
  • Remove uneaten food within a few minutes, especially in warm water where it rots fast.
  • Quarantine new fish for 2–4 weeks.

FAQ

Kenapa ikan berkulat?

Is fish fungus contagious?

Fungus spores are present in most tanks, so it isn't "caught" like a virus. But dirty water and injured fish make outbreaks more likely, so fix the water for the whole tank.

Can I use ubat biru in my main tank?

It's better not to. Methylene blue stains silicone and decor and can harm filter bacteria and plants. Use it in a separate hospital tank or as a short bath.

How do I know fungus is getting better?

The cotton tufts shrink and fall off, and the skin underneath looks clean, then slowly regrows scales or fin tissue. If patches spread quickly, re-check whether it's bacterial instead.
