Pam Air Akuarium: Aquarium Water Pumps, Return Pumps & Flow Rates Explained
A pam air akuarium (aquarium water pump) moves water, not air. It's the motor that pushes water up into a top filter, back from a sump, or around a tank as a circulation pump. The two numbers that matter are flow rate (L/h) and head height (H max), because every pump loses flow the higher it has to push. For a top filter or sump, choose a pump that still gives about 4–6 times your tank volume per hour at your actual pipe height, not at zero height. Don't confuse it with a pam udara (air pump), which only pushes air for airstones and sponge filters.
Water Pump vs Air Pump
| Pam air (water pump) | Pam udara (air pump) | |
|---|---|---|
| Moves | Water | Air |
| Sits | Usually submerged in tank or sump | Outside the tank |
| Used for | Top filters, sumps, circulation, water changes, fountains | Airstones, sponge filters, oxygen |
| Power | Higher | Lower |
| Danger if it fails | Filter stops | Oxygen drops |
Many Malaysian tanks need both: a water pump for filtration and an air pump for oxygen in warm water. For air pumps, see our air pump guide.
Types of Aquarium Water Pumps
| Type | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Submersible pump | Top filters, small sumps, fountains | Most common; sits in water, quiet, cooled by water |
| Return pump (sump) | Sends water from sump back to display tank | Sized for head height and pipe run |
| Circulation pump / powerhead | Moves water inside the tank | No pipe; for flow and dead spots |
| Wavemaker | Pulsing flow, mainly marine | Often controllable |
| External (inline) pump | Big systems, ponds | Sits outside water; needs priming and plumbing |
| DC pump | Any of the above | Adjustable flow, often quieter and efficient; higher price |

Head Height vs Flow: The Key Concept
Every pump label shows Q max (maximum flow, in L/h) and H max (maximum head height, in metres). These two are extremes:
- Q max is the flow at 0 m height. That's only true with no pipe and no lift.
- H max is the height where flow drops to zero.
Real flow is somewhere in between. As a rough guide, if you lift water to about half of H max, you'll get roughly half or less of Q max. Bends, long pipes, small hoses and clogged media cut flow further.
Example: a pump rated 2,000 L/h, H max 2 m, pushing water 1 m up to a top filter, may only give about 1,000 L/h in real use.
Many makers print a flow curve on the box. Use it to read the flow at your height.
Pam Air Akuarium Sizing by Tank (Kaki)
| Tank | Water volume | Target real flow | Pump to look for (top filter, ~0.5–1 m lift) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 kaki | ~55 L | 250–400 L/h | Rated ~600–1,000 L/h |
| 3 kaki | ~155 L | 600–1,000 L/h | Rated ~1,500–2,000 L/h |
| 4 kaki | ~230 L | 1,000–1,500 L/h | Rated ~2,000–3,000 L/h |
| 5–6 kaki (sump) | 350–550 L | 1,500–3,000 L/h | Rated ~3,000–5,000 L/h, check curve |
Goldfish and arowana tanks need the higher end, because both produce a lot of waste. Gentle fish such as bettas, discus and shrimp prefer lower flow. Tank volumes come from our tank size guide.
Pairing Pumps With Top Filters
In a top filter, the pump sits in the tank and pushes water up into the tray.
- Too weak: water barely trickles, media goes stale, and debris builds up.
- Too strong: the tray floods and splashes before water can pass through the media.
- Just right: water spreads evenly over the top sponge and drains steadily.
Use a pump with a flow-control valve, or a ball valve on the outlet, so you can fine-tune it. Fit a sponge prefilter on the intake to protect small fish and keep the impeller clean.
Pairing Pumps With Sumps
In a sump, the return pump must push water up from the cabinet to the tank, often 1–1.5 m.
- Measure the vertical height from the sump water level to the tank outlet.
- Add some extra for every elbow and metre of pipe.
- Pick a pump whose curve gives your target flow at that height.
- Make sure the overflow can drain at least as fast as the pump returns, or the tank overflows.
- Fit a check valve or siphon break so the tank doesn't drain back into the sump during a power cut more than the sump can hold.
Noise and Energy
Pumps run 24 hours a day, so wattage and noise matter.
Reducing noise
- Put the pump on a rubber or sponge pad, not touching glass.
- Clean the impeller. A rattle usually means debris or a worn shaft.
- Keep it fully submerged. Air in the pump causes gurgling and wears it out.
- Use flexible hose sections to stop vibration travelling through rigid pipe.
Saving power
- Don't oversize. A pump twice as strong as needed wastes power and turns the tank into a washing machine.
- DC pumps often use less power for the same flow and can be dialled down.
- Check the wattage on each listing, and compare the flow per watt.
Cleaning the Impeller
The impeller is the small spinning magnet inside the pump. Slime and debris slow it down.
- Unplug the pump.
- Remove the intake cover and pull out the impeller.
- Rinse it and the chamber in tank water. Use an old toothbrush for slime.
- Check the ceramic shaft for cracks, and the rubber bushings for wear.
- Reassemble and restart.
Do this every 1–3 months, or whenever flow drops. Spare impellers, hoses and fittings are under Pump Accessories.
Power Cuts and Safety
- A submersible pump in the tank restarts automatically when power comes back, but check the tray or sump isn't blocked.
- Make a drip loop in the cable, and use a socket with an earth-leakage breaker.
- Never run a submersible pump dry. It overheats and can crack.
- After a long outage, check ammonia. Bacteria can die off when water stops flowing for hours. See aquarium power outages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pam air akuarium 3 kaki perlukan berapa L/h?
What does H max mean on a pump?
It's the maximum height the pump can lift water. At that height, flow is zero. Real flow at your height is always lower than the Q max figure.
Why is my water pump noisy?
Usually debris on the impeller, the pump touching glass, or air getting into the pump. Clean it, place it on a pad and keep it fully submerged.
How long does an aquarium water pump last?
It depends on brand and maintenance, but regular impeller cleaning helps it last much longer. Replace worn impellers before the motor strains.
