Product Description

A livebearer in constant motion, painting quiet waters with restless color.

Buy hardy, colourful Platy fish online—peaceful livebearers ideal for beginner community tanks. Easy care, active, and available in many stunning colour strains.

  • Water conditions: Platies are freshwater livebearers from Central America and are among the most adaptable community fish available. Aim for a stable temperature of 20–26°C (68–79°F), a pH between 6.8 and 8.2, and moderately hard to hard water around 10–20 dGH. They can tolerate a range of parameters, but stability matters far more than chasing an exact number. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, and keep nitrate low through regular water changes—ideally below 20–40 ppm. A cycled, well-filtered aquarium is essential; add a gentle to moderate current and good surface agitation for oxygen exchange. A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 US gallons) suits a small group, while 60 litres or more gives a much better community setup. Platies do not require aquarium salt, so avoid adding it routinely; use it only under specific veterinary or treatment advice. Test water weekly with a liquid test kit, especially during the first few months, and top up with dechlorinated water of a similar temperature.
  • Suitable tank mates: Platies are peaceful, active fish that mix well with most calm community species. Good companions include neon and ember tetras, harlequin rasboras, danios, corydoras catfish, otocinclus, guppies, and other peaceful livebearers. Mollies can work in larger, harder-water setups, but they are more boisterous and should be monitored. Avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs and serpae tetras, large or predatory cichlids, and any fish big enough to eat adult platies. Angelfish may be fine with adult platies but can hunt fry, so plan carefully if you want breeding success. Do not house platies with swordtails if you want to avoid hybridisation—both belong to the Xiphophorus genus and can crossbreed. Keep platies in a group of at least six, with a ratio of one male to two or three females to reduce harassment. A planted tank with driftwood, floating plants, and open swimming space helps tank mates coexist naturally and gives females places to retreat.
  • Feeding habits: Platies are omnivores with a generous appetite and a useful habit of grazing algae from plants, glass, and decor. Offer a quality staple flake or micro-pellet food two or three times daily, using only what the fish can clear in about two minutes. Vary the diet with spirulina and algae-based foods, blanched vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach, plus occasional live or frozen treats including brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworm. This variety supports vivid colour, healthy digestion, and strong breeding condition. Avoid overfeeding, which is a common cause of cloudy water, bloating, and nitrate spikes. If you keep breeding pairs, feed fry finely crushed flake, microworms, or baby brine shrimp several times a day. Remove uneaten food promptly, and include a fasting day occasionally to help prevent digestive issues. Platies will happily eat most foods, but a balanced, portion-controlled diet is key to long-term health.
  • Care requirements: Platies are hardy and beginner-friendly, but they still need proper acclimation and routine maintenance. Float the bag for 15–20 minutes, then drip or gradually add tank water before releasing the fish; quarantine new arrivals for two to four weeks where possible. Perform a 25–30% water change weekly, vacuum the gravel, and rinse filter media only in tank water to protect beneficial bacteria. Keep the tank covered, maintain stable temperature, and avoid overcrowding. Adult platies typically reach around 5–7 cm, and with good care they can live for three to five years. Provide gentle filtration, live or artificial plants, and a few hiding spots without sacrificing open swimming space. Because platies are prolific livebearers, females can store sperm and may produce fry repeatedly; plan for fry care or separate sexes if you do not want population growth. Watch for signs of ich, fin rot, or dropsy, and act quickly if water quality slips. With clean water, varied food, and a peaceful community, platies reward keepers with constant activity and brilliant colour.
