Ram Cichlid (Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi 'Black Knight')

Introducing the Mikrogeophagus ramirezi "Black Knight" — a striking dwarf cichlid that transforms a small aquarium into a living focal point. At a compact 3–4 cm when mature, this color-rich ram is ideal for nano tanks and planted setups where its calm demeanor and vivid presence can shine without crowding the aquascape.

What makes the Black Knight ram stand out

• Distinctive dark phenotype: The Black Knight variant brings a unique, jewel-like depth to your tank, creating dramatic contrast against greens and driftwood while maintaining the delicate elegance dwarf cichlids are known for.
• Perfectly sized for small systems: With a full-grown length around 3–4 cm, it fits comfortably in 20 gallons or larger, making it an excellent primary or centerpiece species in compact setups.
• Peaceful, purposeful ambience: This ram is renowned for its gentle temperament and engaging behavior. It adds lively activity and territory-defining rituals without the aggression of larger cichlids, making it a reliable choice for community tanks with other calm, small fish.

Care essentials at a glance

• Tank requirements: Minimum 20-gallon long or larger with ample plants, gentle filtration, and stable water parameters. A well-planted aquascape with subdued lighting helps the Black Knight feel secure and showcase its color.
• Water parameters: Soft to moderately soft water, slightly acidic to neutral. Target pH around 6.0–7.5 and a temperature of 75–82°F (24–28°C).
• Diet: Omnivorous and adaptable. Offer a varied menu that includes high-quality flake or pellet foods, supplemented with frozen or live treats such as brine shrimp or micro-worms to promote color and vitality.
• Social dynamics: Best kept as a pair or in a small, peaceful community with other non-aggressive fish. Provide plenty of hiding spots and gentle territory boundaries to reduce stress during establishing periods.
• Maintenance tips: Regular small water changes (about 20% weekly) support stable chemistry and color development. Keep substrate clean and provide routine monitoring of pH and temperature to prevent stress-related color fading.

Behaviour, pairing and breeding

The Black Knight ram is engaging to observe. In a stable setup, it may form a pair and exhibit classic cichlid courtship—defensive but not aggressive—around nesting sites on flat surfaces or plant leaves. With patience, you can enjoy natural spawning and fry care, which provides fascinating insight into dwarf cichlid behavior while enriching the aquarium’s daily rhythm.

Ideal use cases

• Nano or small-community tanks where a striking, peaceful centerpiece is desired
• Aquarists seeking a color-rich ram that remains compact and manageable
• Breeding-focused hobbyists who appreciate straightforward, biparental care in a relaxed species

In short, the Mikrogeophagus ramirezi "Black Knight" offers captivating color, approachable care, and engaging behavior in a size-friendly package. Its combination of a tranquil temperament, compact stature, and distinctive phenotype makes it a standout choice for anyone aiming to elevate a planted tank with true dwarf-cichlid charm.
