Crowntail Betta (KCT Black Orchid)

Transform your aquarium with the striking KCT Black Orchid — an aggressive African cichlid demanding high pH, delivering bold colour and commanding presence in any serious display tank.

• Water Conditions: The KCT Black Orchid thrives in hard, alkaline water that replicates its native African rift lake environment. Maintain a pH between 7.8 and 8.8 — never allowing it to drop below 7.5, as acidic conditions quickly stress this species and compromise its immune system. Water hardness should be kept in the range of 12–18 dGH, with a carbonate hardness (KH) of at least 10–12 dKH to buffer against pH swings. Temperature should remain stable between 24°C and 28°C (75°F–82°F), with 26°C being the ideal sweet spot for long-term health and vibrant colouration. Because this fish is sensitive to nitrogenous waste, ammonia and nitrite must always read 0 ppm, and nitrate levels should be kept below 20 ppm through regular partial water changes of 30–50% weekly. Excellent filtration with strong water movement is essential — these cichlids are accustomed to well-oxygenated waters. Adding crushed coral, aragonite sand, or limestone-based décor will help maintain the high pH and hardness this species requires. Avoid driftwood, peat moss, or any tannin-releasing materials, as these acidify the water and will lead to chronic health issues.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Due to its aggressive and territorial temperament, the KCT Black Orchid must be housed with careful consideration. Ideal companions include other robust, similarly-sized African cichlids from Lake Malawi or Lake Tanganyika — species such as other mbuna, peacocks, or Haps that can hold their own. Larger, fast-moving barbs, synodontis catfish, or plecos with thick armour plating can also coexist, provided they are not small enough to be harassed or eaten. Never house this fish with slow-moving, long-finned species such as angelfish, guppies, or bettas — they will be relentlessly chased, nipped, and likely killed. Tank size is critical: a minimum of 250 litres (55 gallons) for a single specimen, and 400+ litres (100 gallons) for a community setup. Overcrowding is a common strategy to dilute aggression in cichlid tanks — maintaining a high stocking density with multiple hiding spots, rock caves, and visual barriers helps spread territorial behaviour. Always introduce the KCT Black Orchid last into an established community to minimise territorial claims, and be prepared to provide rehoming options if aggression becomes uncontrollable.
• Feeding Habits: The KCT Black Orchid is an omnivorous cichlid with a strong preference for protein-rich foods, though it requires a varied diet for optimal colour development and health. In its natural habitat, it would primarily consume small invertebrates, insect larvae, and crustaceans. In the aquarium, offer high-quality cichlid pellets containing spirulina as the staple diet, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and krill, which help enhance the deep black and orchid-purple pigmentation. Feed 2–3 times daily in small quantities — only what the fish can consume in 2–3 minutes per feeding. Overfeeding must be avoided, as these cichlids are prone to bloating and Malawi bloat, a potentially fatal digestive condition. To mitigate this, incorporate vegetable-based foods like spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables (cucumber, courgette, shelled peas) 2–3 times per week. Soaking dry pellets in a garlic-based supplement can stimulate appetite and boost immunity, especially during quarantine or periods of stress. Never feed mammalian meat such as beef heart — the high fat content and indigestible proteins can cause severe digestive problems and shorten the fish's lifespan.
• Care Requirements: Keeping the KCT Black Orchid successfully demands commitment and an understanding of cichlid behaviour. A minimum 250-litre aquarium is non-negotiable for a single fish, but to manage aggression, a larger system of 400 litres or more with a dense rockwork layout is strongly recommended. Construct numerous caves, crevices, and overhangs using smooth, aquarium-safe rocks — limestone and aragonite are ideal as they also buffer the water. Ensure all structures are stable and cannot topple, as these fish are powerful diggers. Provide a sandy substrate to allow natural sifting and digging behaviour, which also helps reduce stress. Quarantine new specimens for at least 4–6 weeks before introducing them to the main tank, as wild-caught or freshly imported cichlids often carry parasites. Routine health checks should include observing for signs of ich (white spots), fin rot, or bloating — early detection is key to successful treatment. This is a long-lived species, with a potential lifespan of 8–10 years under optimal care, so consider the long-term commitment. Due to their aggression, this species is best suited to intermediate or advanced aquarists who have experience managing territorial cichlids. With proper care, stable water parameters, and a well-structured environment, the KCT Black Orchid will reward you with stunning colouration, fascinating behavioural displays, and a commanding presence that makes it the undeniable centrepiece of your aquarium.
