Golden Cobra 26cm: a bold, golden-banded predatory snakehead at a full 26cm, ideal for experienced keepers with a large, tightly lidded species tank.

• Water conditions: The Golden Cobra is a tropical freshwater snakehead that thrives in stable, well-oxygenated water between 24–28°C, with a pH of 6.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard general hardness (GH 5–12). Because it possesses a labyrinth organ, it must have access to the water surface to gulp atmospheric air — a tightly fitting lid is therefore non-negotiable, and it also keeps humidity high and prevents escapes. Filtration should be generous but not a jet wash: turn the tank over six to eight times per hour using a canister filter plus a powerhead or airstone to break the surface, and aim for zero ammonia and nitrite with nitrate kept below 20 mg/L through weekly 25–30% water changes. These fish sulk and become reclusive in soft, acidic, poorly buffered water, so test regularly and avoid sudden swings in temperature or chemistry.
• Tank size and aquascaping: At 26 cm this is an adult-sized, powerfully built predator that needs room to turn and hunt. A footprint of at least 120 × 45 cm (roughly 240 litres) is the sensible minimum, with larger being far better. Furnish the tank with a soft sand substrate, bogwood, slate caves and clusters of robust plants such as Anubias, Microsorum and Cryptocoryne. Floating plants and dim, shaded lighting bring out the golden banding and encourage natural behaviour. Leave open swimming space along the front and middle, and ensure every piece of decor is stable — snakeheads bulldoze and rearrange anything loose.
• Suitable tank mates: Golden Cobras are territorial, predatory and intolerant of conspecifics; the safest and most rewarding approach is a dedicated species tank for a single specimen. If company is wanted, choose robust, fast, mid-to-upper-water fish that are too large to swallow — silver dollars, large barbs, giant danios, tinfoil barbs or sizable cichlids — and introduce them into a well-established tank before the snakehead settles in. Absolutely avoid anything small enough to fit in its mouth, plus long-finned, slow-moving or bottom-dwelling fish such as loaches, Corydoras and plecos, which are commonly nipped or eaten. Never mix with other snakeheads, and never house pairs unless you are an experienced breeder with a divider and a definite plan.
• Feeding habits: An obligate carnivore, the Golden Cobra should be fed a high-protein diet of prawn, mussel, white fish, earthworms, crickets, cockles and the occasional whole feeder fish if you can source clean, quarantined stock. Offer food two or three times a week in portions roughly the size of its eye, removing anything uneaten after a few minutes to protect water quality. Many specimens are shy feeders at first and will only take live or freshly killed food, so be patient during the settling-in period and try tongs or a feeding stick. Gut-loaded insects and a good vitamin supplement help prevent the nutritional deficiencies that commonly affect predator-heavy diets. Never feed mammalian meat, and avoid overfeeding — snakeheads are gluttonous and prone to obesity and bloat.
• Care and behaviour: Expect an intelligent, inquisitive fish with real personality that will learn to recognise its keeper. This is a jumper and an escape artist of the first order — weight the lid, seal every cable cut-out, and never leave the tank open, even briefly. The Golden Cobra is best kept at stable temperatures, acclimatised slowly by drip method, and left largely undisturbed for the first fortnight; stress and poor water quality are the main causes of the fungal and bacterial infections these fish are prone to. Watch for white patches, frayed fins or laboured breathing and act quickly with an isolation tank if needed. Keep a spare heater, a test kit and a quarantine setup on hand, and always quarantine new arrivals before any introduction.
