• Water conditions: The Golden Cobra thrives in stable, clean freshwater with a temperature of 22–28°C, a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and a general hardness of roughly 2–12 dGH. Aim for soft to moderately hard water with minimal fluctuations, as sudden changes can stress the fish and trigger health issues. Provide moderate to strong filtration while keeping the current gentle—these fish appreciate well-oxygenated water but dislike turbulent surface movement. Because snakeheads are capable of breathing atmospheric air, ensure the tank has a tight-fitting lid with a small gap for air exchange and enough open surface area for gulping. Carry out 25–30% weekly water changes using a good dechlorinator, vacuum the substrate regularly, and keep the filter mature and cycled. Stable parameters matter far more than chasing a specific number, so test routinely and avoid overstocking.
• Tank size and setup: A single adult Golden Cobra at around 25 cm needs a tank of at least 120 × 45 × 45 cm—roughly 240 litres—though larger is always better, especially if you plan to keep a pair. Use a soft sand or smooth gravel substrate, add driftwood, smooth rocks, and cave-like structures to create territories and secure hiding spots. Floating plants and dim lighting help replicate natural shaded conditions, while a clear open area gives the fish room to patrol. Secure every gap: these fish are powerful jumpers and can escape through surprisingly small openings. A heavy, close-fitting lid is non-negotiable. Keep décor stable and avoid sharp edges, since the fish may dart quickly when startled.
• Suitable tank mates: The safest approach is a species-only setup or a dedicated tank for a single specimen. Golden Cobras are predatory and territorial, particularly as they mature, and they will eat any fish small enough to swallow. If you choose tank mates, select robust, medium-to-large species that occupy different levels and can handle assertive behaviour—examples include large cyprinids, sturdy loaches, and similarly sized robust cichlids, depending on the individual fish’s temperament. Avoid small shoaling fish, guppies, neon tetras, shrimp, snails, and long-finned species that are easily nipped or eaten. Always introduce tank mates carefully, monitor aggression closely, and be prepared to separate fish if bullying or injury occurs. Quarantine new arrivals before adding them to the main system.
• Feeding habits: As a carnivorous predator, the Golden Cobra needs a high-protein diet. Offer a varied mix of live and frozen foods such as earthworms, prawns, mussel meat, bloodworm, crickets, and appropriately sized insect larvae. High-quality sinking pellets designed for carnivorous fish can form the staple once the fish is trained to accept them, but many specimens initially refuse dry food, so be patient and persistent. Feed once or twice daily, offering only what the fish can consume within a few minutes, and remove any uneaten food to protect water quality. Include one fasting day per week to support digestion and prevent obesity. Avoid feeding fatty mammalian meats or unreliable feeder fish; if you use feeder fish, source them from a trusted, quarantined supply. A vitamin supplement can help ensure balanced nutrition.
• Care requirements and behaviour: The Golden Cobra is intelligent, observant, and often interactive, sometimes recognising its keeper and begging for food. That personality comes with a serious side: it is solitary, territorial, and capable of sudden bursts of aggression, especially during feeding or at maturity. Handle it only when necessary, using a container rather than a net to reduce injury and stress. Acclimatise slowly using the drip method, and quarantine new fish before introduction. Monitor for common issues such as fin rot, skin parasites, and obesity, which are often linked to poor water quality or overfeeding. With proper care, this species can live for many years—often a decade or more—so plan for a long-term commitment and future tank upgrades as the fish grows. Regular observation, stable water, and a secure lid are the foundations of successful keeping.
