• Water Conditions: Channa Limbata Granit thrives in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5 and a general hardness of 2–12 dGH. Maintain a stable temperature of 22–28°C (72–82°F). Although they are obligate air breathers and can tolerate lower oxygen levels, clean, well-filtered water is essential. Use a gentle-flow filter such as a sponge or baffled canister to mimic their natural slow-moving forest streams. Perform 20–30% water changes weekly, using a quality dechlorinator, and avoid sudden parameter shifts. Keep the water level a few centimetres below the tank lid to provide a humid air space, but ensure the lid is tight-fitting as they are accomplished escape artists. Nitrates should be kept low; regular maintenance and efficient filtration are key to long-term health.
• Tank Mates: This dwarf snakehead is a micropredator and will eat any fish or invertebrate small enough to swallow, including shrimp, snails and tiny tetras. Therefore, the safest approach is a species-only aquarium. If you wish to add tank mates, choose robust, fast-swimming fish that are too large to be eaten and occupy the upper water column, such as medium barbs, larger rainbowfish or peaceful, bottom-dwelling loaches. Avoid long-finned, slow-moving or aggressive species, as they may be nipped or bullied. Housing with other snakeheads, especially conspecifics, is risky due to territorial aggression; a single specimen or a compatible pair in a spacious, heavily decorated tank is more reliable. Groups can occasionally work if introduced together as juveniles in a very large aquarium with abundant hiding spots, but monitor closely for signs of bullying or stress.
• Feeding Habits: Channa Limbata Granit is a carnivorous ambush predator that requires a meaty diet. In the wild, they feed on insects, small fish, crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates. In captivity, offer a varied menu of live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, mysis, chopped prawn, earthworms, crickets and small fish. Many specimens can be trained to accept high-quality sinking pellets or sticks, but this may take time and patience. Feed once or twice daily, providing only what they can consume in a few minutes to prevent overfeeding, as they are prone to obesity and fatty liver disease. Because they are shy and often hide, target feeding near their favourite cave or use a pipette to deliver food directly. Remove any uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality. If a new arrival refuses food, try live prey to stimulate their natural hunting instinct.
• Care Requirements: A minimum aquarium size of 60 cm (24 inches) is suitable for a single specimen, while a pair or small group requires at least 90–120 cm (36–48 inches) with a generous footprint. Set up the tank with a soft sand or fine gravel substrate, plenty of driftwood, rock caves, PVC pipes and hardy plants like Anubias, Java fern and floating species to provide shade and security. Subdued lighting and a dark background will help them feel safe and show their best granite-like coloration. Since they are escape artists, use a tight-fitting lid with no gaps, and allow a humid air space above the water for their labyrinth organ. Acclimatise new fish slowly, especially wild-caught specimens, and quarantine for at least four weeks while treating for internal parasites. Maintain excellent water quality, as they are susceptible to fin rot and skin infections if conditions degrade. Regular observation is important to catch aggression or illness early.
