Tankmates: Best in a species tank; hybridises with B. splendens - do not keep together.
Feeding: Insectivores/micropredators. Overfeeding is a common cause of bloat and poor water quality. Wild-caught fish may need live or frozen food before accepting pellets.

The Mahachai betta, Betta mahachaiensis, is a wild betta from the Mahachai (Samut Sakhon) area near Bangkok, Thailand. It belongs to the same group as the domestic fighting fish, but has a dark body covered in shiny green to blue scales and short, rounded fins. Among wild betta fans in Malaysia, it is valued for its metallic shine and its unusual brackish-water origins.
It is a good wild betta for keepers who already know the basics and want something closer to nature than a show plakat. FishyHub lists Mahachai bettas from Malaysian sellers and breeders, with prices in RM.
In the wild, this species lives among nipa palms in slightly brackish coastal swamps. That small habitat has shrunk as land is developed, so wild populations are threatened. Choose captive-bred fish, and avoid hybrids if you want a pure line. Mahachai can cross with Betta splendens, and look-alike hybrids are common.

Because its natural habitat is slightly salty, some keepers add a small, measured amount of garam ikan (aquarium salt). Many captive-bred lines, however, are kept in ordinary fresh water. The safest approach is to ask the seller how their fish were raised and match it, then make any change slowly.
Malaysian tap water is chlorinated and often soft with low KH, so pH can swing in a small tank. Use anti klorin, test the water now and then, and do small, regular water changes instead of large ones.
Mahachai bettas are bubble nesters. A floating leaf or plant at the surface gives the male a place to build.
Prices in RM depend on purity, colour and whether you buy a pair. East Malaysia buyers should check with the seller first.
Possibly, with small calm fish in a planted 2-foot tank, but males are territorial. Many keepers prefer a species-only tank.
No. Both are in the splendens group, but Mahachai has an all-over metallic green-blue look, while imbellis shows a red crescent on the tail.
