Pemangsa Kolam Ikan: Protect Your Fish Pond from Herons, Biawak, Cats and Otters

Fish vanishing from your pond overnight? The usual pemangsa kolam ikan (pond predators) in Malaysia are herons and egrets (burung bangau), kingfishers, monitor lizards (biawak), cats, otters (memerang) and sometimes snakes. The most reliable protection is a net or mesh cover, plus steep sides and a depth of at least 75–90 cm, and hiding places where fish can escape. Several of these predators are protected wildlife in Malaysia, so the aim is to keep them out, not to harm them. Below is how to work out who's visiting and how to stop them.

Who's Eating My Fish? Identify the Predator

Predator Signs When Targets
Grey / purple heron, egrets (burung bangau) Fish gone without a mess; bird standing at the edge; droppings Early morning, dusk Medium–large koi fish and goldfish
Kingfisher (burung pekaka / raja udang) Small fish disappearing; bright bird perched nearby Daytime Guppies, small goldfish, young koi
Asian water monitor (biawak air) Big splashes, damaged plants, tail-drag marks, eaten fish Daytime Fish of any size, eggs
Cats (kucing) Fish scooped out, scales or bodies on the ground, paw prints Night or early morning Shallow-pond fish near the edge
Otters (memerang) Many fish gone in one night, half-eaten fish on the edge, strong smell, spraint (droppings) Night, dawn Whole pond stocks, especially near rivers and mangroves
Snakes (ular) Small fish disappearing, snake seen in plants Varies Small fish, frogs
Rats Small fish and food missing Night Small fish, pellets

Tip: a cheap outdoor camera pointed at the pond overnight usually solves the mystery in a day or two.

Pemangsa Kolam Ikan: The Best Defences

1. Net or mesh cover (most effective)

  • Pond netting stretched taut over a frame, 15–30 cm above the water so birds can't stand on it and reach through.
  • Rigid mesh panels (welded wire or coated mesh) are stronger against biawak, otters and cats.
  • Use a fine enough mesh to stop kingfishers, about 2–3 cm or smaller.
  • Secure the edges with pegs, weights or a frame. Loose nets can trap birds and lizards, so check regularly.

Find pond netting and accessories under pond equipment and accessories.

2. Depth and steep sides

  • Herons wade. They can't fish in water deeper than their legs, so avoid shallow shelves and gently sloping edges.
  • Aim for 75–90 cm or more, with vertical walls. This also keeps water cooler in our heat.
  • Raised ponds with walls 45–60 cm high stop herons walking in and make cats less confident.
  • If you have planting shelves, place them so fish can't be cornered there.

3. Hiding places

  • Give fish caves or tunnels: wide pipes, stacked stone shelters or purpose-made fish shelters on the bottom.
  • Water lily pads (teratai) give overhead cover from birds and shade.
  • Floating plant islands help too.

4. Barriers around the pond

  • Low fence or wire 30–45 cm high around the pond edge stops herons wading in.
  • Mesh skirting or a solid wall base helps keep out otters and biawak (otters and biawak can climb and dig, so this deters rather than guarantees).
  • Close gaps under gates and drains near riverside or mangrove areas.

5. Deterrents

  • Motion-activated sprinklers startle cats, herons and biawak.
  • Decoy herons sometimes work for a while. Move them around often.
  • Lights at night deter some visitors.
  • Remove attractions: don't leave fish food, pet food or rubbish out.

Specific Tips by Predator

Herons and egrets

  • These are the most common pond raiders in Malaysian housing areas, especially near padi fields, lakes and drains.
  • A net, plus deep vertical sides, is the answer.
  • Feed fish when you're present, so they don't learn to rise at any shadow.

Kingfishers

  • They dive from a perch, so remove perches over the water or cover the pond with fine mesh.
  • They mostly take small fish, so mini ponds with guppies need full mesh covers.

Biawak (monitor lizards)

  • Biawak are common near monsoon drains, rivers and housing estates.
  • Use strong, rigid mesh, as they can tear soft netting.
  • Don't try to catch or kill them yourself. The water monitor is protected wildlife under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716), according to PERHILITAN. If a biawak won't leave, contact PERHILITAN or the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), who often handle animal removal calls.

Cats

  • Cats fish from the edge, so keep fish away from shallow margins.
  • An overhanging stone lip, mesh cover or motion sprinkler works well.

Otters (memerang)

  • Otters can clear out a koi pond in a single night. They are increasingly seen in urban areas near rivers, lakes and the coast.
  • Use rigid, strong mesh lids and secure fencing.
  • Otters are protected wildlife, so don't harm them. Contact PERHILITAN if they become a regular problem.

Know the Law

Many wild birds, otters and monitor lizards are protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716) in Peninsular Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak have their own wildlife laws. Harming, trapping or killing protected wildlife can lead to heavy penalties. Always use exclusion and deterrents, and if you need help, contact PERHILITAN (or the Sabah Wildlife Department / Sarawak Forestry Corporation in East Malaysia). Rules can change, so confirm with the authorities before taking any action against wildlife.

After an Attack

  1. Check the remaining fish for wounds, as bird and claw marks get infected easily in warm water.
  2. Treat wounds with an appropriate fish medication and keep water quality high. See our fish wound guide.
  3. Test the water. Stressed fish need clean water, and dead fish rot quickly.
  4. Fit protection before restocking. Predators return to a known food source.

Stressed koi may also hide, jump or stop eating, as our koi jumping guide explains.

Building a New Pond?

Design protection in from the start, with deep, vertical walls, a raised edge, built-in fish caves and a frame for netting. See our cara buat kolam ikan guide, or browse ready-made ponds on FishyHub. When choosing products, check each listing for net size, mesh size, material (UV-resistant) and dimensions, and ask the seller if you're unsure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Macam mana nak halang burung bangau makan ikan kolam? Pasang jaring yang tegang di atas kolam, buat kolam lebih dalam dengan dinding tegak, dan sediakan tempat persembunyian untuk ikan. Burung bangau sukar menangkap ikan di air yang dalam.

Biawak masuk kolam ikan, apa nak buat? Jangan tangkap atau bunuh biawak sendiri kerana ia hidupan liar yang dilindungi. Pasang jaring besi yang kuat dan hubungi PERHILITAN atau Bomba jika biawak tidak mahu pergi.

What net size keeps kingfishers out? Use mesh of about 2–3 cm or smaller, stretched taut above the water.

How deep should a pond be to stop herons? At least 75–90 cm with vertical sides, so herons can't wade in.

Can otters really empty a koi pond? Yes, in a single night. Use rigid mesh lids and secure fencing in areas near rivers or the coast.
