Ikan Bandaraya Makan Apa? Pleco Care, Size & Why You Must Never Release Them
Ikan bandaraya makan apa? Plecos (ikan bandaraya) do not live on algae alone. Most aquarium plecos need sinking algae wafers or pellets, blanched vegetables such as cucumber, zucchini and spinach, and driftwood to rasp on. Some species also need meaty foods like bloodworm. Feed them at night, after the lights go off. Just as important: the common pleco sold as a small "glass cleaner" grows to 30–50 cm, and it is one of Malaysia's worst invasive fish in rivers. Choose a small species like the bristlenose for most home tanks, and never release a pleco into a drain, pond or river.
Common Pleco vs Bristlenose vs L-Number Plecos
"Ikan bandaraya" is used loosely in Malaysia for several suckermouth catfish. The difference in adult size is huge:
| Type | Adult size | Minimum tank | Diet | Good for home tanks? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common / sailfin pleco (Pterygoplichthys and similar) | 30–50 cm | 5–6 kaki | Mostly vegetable, plus wood and some protein | Only with a very large tank |
| Bristlenose pleco (Ancistrus) | 10–15 cm | 2–3 kaki | Mostly vegetable | Yes, the best choice |
| Clown pleco (Panaqolus) | ~10 cm | 2–3 kaki | Wood plus vegetables | Yes |
| Rubber-lip / bulldog pleco (Chaetostoma) | ~10–12 cm | 2–3 kaki | Algae and biofilm | Yes, likes flow and oxygen |
| L-number plecos (many species) | 8–30+ cm | Varies | Some are vegetarian, some are carnivores | Research each one |
"L-numbers" are codes used for plecos before they had scientific names. Some are vegetarian wood-eaters, others eat mostly meaty foods. Ask the seller which type you are buying.
Pleco Care Table
| Factor | What plecos need |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 24–30°C; Malaysian rooms are fine |
| Minimum tank | Bristlenose: 2 kaki (~55 L). Common pleco: 5–6 kaki |
| Water | Wide tolerance; clean water and good oxygen |
| Temperament | Peaceful; territorial with other plecos of the same size |
| Diet | Mostly vegetable, with wood and some protein depending on species |
| Lifespan | 10–15 years or more for many species |
| Beginner? | Bristlenose: yes. Common pleco: only with a big tank |
Ikan Bandaraya Makan Apa? What to Feed a Pleco
The basics
- Sinking algae wafers or pleco tablets as a daily staple. See food for plecos and bottom feeders.
- Blanched vegetables 2–3 times a week: cucumber (timun), zucchini, spinach, peas without skin. Weigh them down with a clean stone or plant weight and remove leftovers after 12–24 hours.
- Driftwood: many plecos rasp on wood for fibre. Bristlenose and clown plecos especially benefit. Our Malaysian driftwood guide covers preparation.
- Protein once or twice a week for omnivorous species: frozen bloodworm, shrimp pellets.
Feeding tips
- Feed after lights-out. Plecos are mostly nocturnal, and daytime fish may grab the food first.
- A pleco with a hollow, sunken belly is underfed, even if the tank has algae.
- Plecos make a lot of waste. Do not overfeed, and keep up weekly water changes.
The algae myth
Many people buy a pleco "to clean the glass". A young pleco will eat some algae, but adults often stop, and a large pleco adds far more waste than it removes. If algae is your problem, fix light and nutrients first. Otocinclus, nerite snails and bristlenose plecos are better algae helpers for small tanks.
Tank Setup
- Caves: plecos like a hiding spot. Clay pleco caves, driftwood tunnels or stacked stones work well.
- Substrate: smooth sand or fine gravel.
- Filtration: strong, with good oxygen. In warm Malaysian water, add an air pump; plecos from fast rivers need well-oxygenated water.
- Lid: plecos rarely jump, but a lid stops other fish jumping and slows evaporation.
Bristlenose males grow bushy "bristles" on the snout and guard eggs in caves. They breed fairly easily, so have a plan for the young.
Ikan Bandaraya Bahaya? Why Plecos Are a Problem in Malaysian Rivers
Released and escaped plecos, mostly sailfin types (Pterygoplichthys), have spread through rivers, lakes and ex-mining pools in Malaysia. Local news reports describe the suckermouth catfish as one of the most damaging invasive fish, with huge populations in some river systems, and the Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia has organised removal programmes.
Why they cause harm:
- They burrow into riverbanks to nest, which can make banks unstable.
- They compete with native fish for food and space.
- They have few natural predators here, and they tolerate poor water.
- They damage fishing nets and reduce catches for inland fishers.
"Bahaya" in this sense is about the environment. A pleco is not dangerous to people in an aquarium. Its spines can prick hands, though, so handle with a net, not bare hands.
Jangan lepaskan ikan ke sungai
DOF reports about 80 alien fish species established in Malaysian waters. Release rules are set by each state: Perlis, for example, now fines people up to RM20,000 for releasing foreign fish into rivers without written permission. If your pleco outgrows its tank:
- Offer it to a shop or hobbyist with a big tank.
- Ask in local fishkeeping groups.
- Never release it into a drain, lake, pond or river, even at a temple or for a religious ceremony.
Rules on release vary by state, so confirm with DOF Malaysia or your state fisheries office.
Ikan Bandaraya Boleh Makan?
People ask this because wild plecos are so common. Plecos are eaten in parts of Latin America, but wild fish from polluted urban rivers and drains can carry contaminants. We do not recommend eating wild-caught ikan bandaraya from Malaysian waterways. Follow official health advice if you are considering it. Aquarium plecos are pets, not food.
Buying Plecos on FishyHub
Browse plecos for sale and the wider plecos, corys and bottom dwellers category. Before you buy:
- Check the species and adult size, not just the current size.
- Ask whether the fish is a bristlenose, a common pleco or a specific L-number.
- Check whether the photo is the actual fish, the seller's location, delivery or self-collect options and live-arrival terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ikan bandaraya makan apa?
Is ikan bandaraya dangerous?
Not to people in an aquarium, though its fin spines can prick. It is harmful to Malaysian rivers when released, because it burrows into banks and competes with native fish.
Can a pleco live with goldfish?
It is not ideal. Some plecos suck on the slime coat of slow fish like fancy goldfish, and goldfish prefer cooler water. Keep plecos with tropical community fish instead.
Why is my pleco not moving?
Plecos rest during the day and become active at night. If it is also breathing fast or has a sunken belly, check water quality and feeding. See why aquarium fish die.
Plecos are interesting, long-lived fish when you pick the right species and feed them properly. Browse plecos and pleco food from Malaysian sellers on FishyHub, and choose a bristlenose if your tank is under 4 kaki.
