Balik Kampung & Cuti: How to Tinggalkan Ikan Semasa Cuti Raya

Going balik kampung for Hari Raya, Chinese New Year or Deepavali, or taking a long school-holiday trip? You can tinggalkan ikan semasa cuti safely for several days with a bit of preparation. Healthy adult fish in a cycled tank can go 3–7 days without food, so the real risks are not hunger but overfeeding by a helper, a power cut, a filter stopping, or heat. Do a water change a few days before you leave, test your feeder or prepare portioned food, put the light on a timer, and leave clear instructions. Here's a complete checklist.

Tinggalkan Ikan Semasa Cuti: How Long Can Fish Be Left Alone?

Trip length What to do
1–3 days Feed normally before you go; no food needed while away
4–7 days Most adult fish are fine without food; an auto feeder or a single light feeding by a helper is optional
1–2 weeks Use an auto feeder or a trusted helper; arrange checks for power and filter
Over 2 weeks Arrange a helper who visits at least twice a week, or ask a local fish shop or hobbyist about fish-sitting

Fry, baby fish and some species (small nano fish, seahorses, fish on live food) need regular food and are harder to leave. Plan longer trips around them.

One Week Before: Prepare the Tank

  1. Don't add new fish in the two weeks before a trip. New arrivals are the most likely to get sick.
  2. Check equipment: clean filter sponges in old tank water (at least 5–7 days before, not the day before), check the air pump and tubing, and replace anything that sounds noisy.
  3. Test your water: ammonia and nitrite should be 0. Fix problems now, not on departure day.
  4. Trim plants and remove dead leaves, so nothing rots while you're away.

2–3 Days Before: Water Change

Do a 25–30% water change two or three days before leaving, using tap water treated with anti klorin. Not on the morning you leave: if something goes wrong (temperature, a missed dose of anti klorin, a disturbed filter), you'll see it while you're still home.

Top the tank up to the full line, because Malaysian tanks lose water to evaporation, especially in hot weather. Our evaporation guide explains why levels drop.

Feeding Options While You're Away

Option 1: No food (short trips)

For trips up to about 4–5 days, the safest choice for most healthy adult fish is to feed normally until you leave and then not at all. Uneaten food is a bigger danger than a few days of fasting.

Option 2: Automatic fish feeder

A battery-powered auto feeder dispenses flakes or pellets on a schedule.

  • Test it for at least a week before your trip to check the portion size. Most people set them too generous.
  • Use dry pellets or granules, which flow more reliably than flakes in humid Malaysian weather.
  • Mount it so moisture from the tank doesn't clump the food.
  • Fit fresh batteries.

Find feeders in FishyHub's feeding accessories category.

Option 3: Holiday food blocks (makanan ikan cuti)

These slow-release blocks or gel feeders dissolve over several days. They suit some tanks, but:

  • In small tanks they can cloud water or raise ammonia.
  • Some fish ignore them, leaving them to rot.
  • Test one at home first and see how your fish and water react.

Browse options under holiday foods.

Option 4: A helper

A neighbour, relative or friend can feed, but the most common holiday disaster is a helper who overfeeds. To prevent this:

  • Pre-portion food into a weekly pill box, one compartment per feeding day.
  • Tell them to feed only every second or third day.
  • Hide the main food container.

Lights: Use a Timer

Lights left on for days cause algae; lights left off for a week are fine for fish but not ideal for plants. A simple timer plug set to 6–8 hours a day keeps a normal routine. Look in lighting accessories for timers.

Power Cuts and Equipment Failure

Power cuts and tripped switches are the biggest real risk when no one is home. In warm Malaysian water, a tank without a running filter or air pump can lose oxygen within hours, especially if it's well stocked.

  • Battery or rechargeable backup air pump: some switch on automatically when power fails. This is the most useful holiday purchase for a stocked tank.
  • Don't overstock before a trip.
  • Check your plug and extension board are secure and dry.
  • Leave the home's main electricity on; it's easy to switch everything off by habit when leaving.
  • Ask a neighbour to check if there's a known outage in your area.

Our power outage guide covers this in more depth.

Heat: The Hidden Danger

With windows shut, curtains closed and no aircond running, a closed-up house can get very hot during the day. That warms the tank and lowers oxygen.

  • Draw curtains on windows that get afternoon sun near the tank.
  • Keep a small aquarium fan on a timer for tanks that run hot. See our cooling guide.
  • Run an air pump: more aeration offsets warm-water oxygen loss.

Instructions for Your Helper

Leave a simple note by the tank:

  1. Feed only from the pill box, on the marked days.
  2. Check the filter is running and bubbles are coming out.
  3. Check the light is coming on (if they visit during the day).
  4. If the power was cut, check the filter restarted.
  5. If a fish dies, remove it with the net.
  6. Your phone number, and the number of a fish shop or hobbyist friend who can help.

When You Come Back

  • Check the fish and remove any dead fish or rotting food.
  • Do a 20–30% water change.
  • Resume normal feeding gradually, starting small.
  • Check filter flow and clean the sponge if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I switch the filter off while I'm away?

No. The filter must run all the time; it keeps water moving and supports the bacteria that break down waste.

Are holiday feeder blocks safe?

They can be, especially in larger tanks, but some cloud the water in small tanks. Always test one at home first.

What about my betta?

An adult betta can usually skip food for several days. For longer trips, an auto feeder set to tiny portions or a helper with pre-portioned pellets works.
