Ketam Hiasan Air Tawar: Freshwater Crab & Red Claw Crab Care in Malaysia
Ketam hiasan (ornamental crabs) are fun, characterful pets, but most of them are not simple "put it in the fish tank" animals. The key question before you buy is whether your crab is fully aquatic or semi-terrestrial. Fully aquatic crabs like the Thai micro crab live underwater full time. Semi-terrestrial crabs like the red claw crab and vampire crab need a land area to climb out on, and the red claw crab also needs slightly salty (brackish) water. All crabs need a tight-fitting lid, because they are escape artists. Get these three things right and a ketam akuarium can live for several years.
Crabs are also the legal option for Malaysians who want a clawed invertebrate: crayfish are prohibited in Malaysia under Department of Fisheries (DOF) rules, so don't buy them. Lists can change, so confirm with DOF Malaysia if you're unsure about any species.
Common Ornamental Crabs Compared
| Crab | Lifestyle | Water | Adult size (body) | Needs land? | Community tank? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thai micro crab | Fully aquatic | Freshwater | ~1 cm | No | Yes, with tiny peaceful fish |
| Panther crab | Mostly aquatic | Freshwater | 4–5 cm | Small rock to climb | No; will catch fish |
| Red claw crab | Semi-terrestrial | Brackish | 4–5 cm (plus claws) | Yes | No |
| Vampire crab | Semi-terrestrial | Freshwater | 2–3 cm | Yes, mostly land | No; paludarium |
| Fiddler crab | Semi-terrestrial | Brackish | 2–5 cm | Yes, sandy beach | No |
Names in listings vary, so ask the seller for the scientific name if you're not sure what you're getting.
Red Claw Crab Care
The red claw crab (Perisesarma bidens) is the most common freshwater crab sold in shops, and it's also the most misunderstood. In the wild it lives in mangroves and estuaries, so:
- Water: slightly brackish. A small amount of marine salt (not just garam ikan aquarium salt) to a low specific gravity of roughly 1.005 suits it. Pure freshwater shortens its life.
- Land: it spends a lot of time out of the water. Give it a sloping sand bank, rocks or a floating platform.
- Tank: a 2 kaki tank (around 55–65 L) half filled with water works for a small group of 2–3 crabs, more females than males.
- Lid: tight, with gaps around tubes and cables blocked. A red claw crab will climb air tubing and disappear behind the cabinet.
Males have bigger, brighter red claws. They can be territorial, so give each crab its own hiding spot.
Fully Aquatic Crabs
If you want a crab that lives in a normal planted tank, look for a fully aquatic species. The Thai micro crab (Limnopilos naiyanetri) is tiny, shy and filter-feeds, so it can live in a mature shrimp or nano tank. It needs gentle flow, plenty of plant roots or moss to hide in, and no fish big enough to eat it.
Panther crabs and other larger aquatic crabs are fully aquatic but predatory, so they need a species tank.
Semi-Terrestrial Setup (Paludarium)
Vampire crabs, red claw crabs and fiddler crabs do best in a paludarium or riparium: a tank that's part land, part water.
- Tank: a 1.5–2 kaki tank with a tight lid. Height matters less than floor area.
- Land area: at least a third to half of the floor. Use sand, soil, cork bark or a filled divider.
- Water area: a shallow pool deep enough to submerge in, with a gentle slope out.
- Filter: a small internal or sponge filter in the water section.
- Humidity: keep the land moist. Malaysia's natural humidity helps, but aircond rooms dry tanks out fast.
- Hides: coconut shells, cork tubes and plants.
Temperature in Malaysia
Most ornamental crabs come from tropical Southeast Asia and are comfortable at normal Malaysian room temperatures of about 24–28°C. You don't need a heater. Avoid direct sunlight, since a closed paludarium can overheat quickly.
What Do Ketam Hiasan Eat?
Crabs are scavengers and omnivores. A varied diet keeps their shells healthy.
- Sinking pellets or crab/shrimp food from food for shrimps and crabs
- Blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini, peas)
- Frozen bloodworm (cacing darah) or brine shrimp as a treat
- Dried daun ketapang to graze on
- Cuttlebone or calcium-rich food for molting
Feed small amounts every day or two and remove leftovers after a few hours so the water stays clean. Semi-terrestrial crabs often take food back onto land.
Molting
Like shrimp, crabs grow by shedding their shell. Before molting a crab may hide for days and stop eating. Afterwards, leave the old shell in the tank; the crab eats it to recover calcium. A crab is soft and vulnerable after molting, so other crabs or fish can attack it. Plenty of hides help.
Low calcium or unstable water causes failed molts. Malaysian tap water is often soft, so test GH with a kit from water test kits and add minerals if it's very low. Always treat water with anti klorin first. See the Malaysian tap water guide.
Can Crabs Live With Fish or Shrimp?
Mostly no. Larger crabs catch sleeping fish at night and will eat shrimp. They also tend to escape community tanks because there's no land. The exception is the Thai micro crab, which is safe with shrimp and very small fish. For other crabs, plan a species-only tank.
Shrimp are often the better choice if you want invertebrates in a community tank. Our shrimp tank setup guide and types of udang hiasan cover those.
Buying Crabs on FishyHub
Browse ornamental crabs from Malaysian sellers. On each listing, check:
- the species name (ask if it's not given)
- whether the crab is sold as brackish or freshwater
- male or female
- the seller's location and delivery or self-collect options
Never release crabs into drains, rivers or mangroves. Non-native animals can harm local wildlife, and release rules are set by each state, so ask DOF Malaysia before releasing any animal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my crab keep escaping?
Crabs climb anything: silicone corners, air tubing, plants. Semi-terrestrial crabs also escape when there's no land area. Fit a tight lid and give them a place to leave the water.
Are crabs a legal alternative to crayfish, which are prohibited?
Yes. Crayfish are prohibited in Malaysia under DOF rules, so a crab is the legal alternative. Check with DOF if you're unsure about a particular species.
How long do freshwater crabs live?
With good care, red claw and vampire crabs commonly live around 2–3 years. Stress, poor water and failed molts shorten that.
