Ikan Laga atau Guppy? Betta vs Guppy for Beginners in Malaysia

Choosing between ikan laga atau guppy as your first fish? The short answer: pick an ikan laga (betta) if you want one colourful pet in a small tank with little fuss, and pick guppies if you want an active group that breeds and fills a bigger tank with life. Both handle Malaysian room temperature (26–31°C) without a heater, both are cheap to start, and both are sold by Malaysian breeders. What decides it is space, how much breeding you want, and whether you want one fish or a community.

Space and Tank Size

Betta: one male betta lives happily in a 1 kaki tank with a lid, a sponge filter and some plants. Bowls and tiny cups are common in Malaysian kedai, but they make water quality swing fast in our heat. A 1 kaki tank or bigger is kinder and actually less work.

Guppy: guppies are social and active, so plan for a group. A 2 kaki tank (about 55 L) is the sweet spot for beginners: it holds a healthy group and stays stable. See our tank size guide for litres per size.

Breeding: The Biggest Difference

This is where most beginners get surprised.

  • Guppies are livebearers and breed constantly. Keep males and females together and you'll have fry within a month or two. That's fun at first, but a 2 kaki tank can become crowded fast. Plan for it: keep males only, or have a plan for the babies. Our article on why guppies eat their fry explains what happens in a mixed tank.
  • Bettas don't breed by accident. Males and females are kept apart. Breeding takes a separate setup, conditioning and careful timing, and the male can kill the female if it goes wrong.

If you want zero surprises, a single betta or a male-only guppy tank is simplest.

Daily Care and Effort

Task Betta Guppy
Feeding Once or twice a day, small pellets or frozen food Once or twice a day, flakes or micro pellets
Water change 20–30% weekly 20–30% weekly
Anti klorin Every water change Every water change
Watching for problems Fin damage, sitting at the bottom Clamped fins, "shimmying", overcrowding

Both need the same basics: treated tap water, regular water changes and not overfeeding. Malaysian tap water is chlorinated, so use anti klorin every time. Our tap water guide covers why.

Water hardness

Guppies prefer slightly harder water. Much of Malaysian tap water is soft with low KH, so some guppy keepers add mineral supplements or crushed coral. Bettas are fine in soft water. If you choose guppies, a basic test kit is worth buying early.

Personality: One Star or a Busy Crowd?

  • Bettas recognise their owner, come to the glass at feeding time, flare at reflections and build bubble nests. Many people like having one "pet" with character. Read our full cara jaga ikan laga guide.
  • Guppies are about movement and colour. A group of males in different tail types and colours is like a living painting, and watching fry grow is great for kids. See the full guppy care guide.

Can Betta and Guppy Live Together?

It's possible but not ideal for beginners.

  • Male bettas may attack male guppies, especially fancy guppies with big, colourful tails that look like rival bettas.
  • Guppies sometimes nip the betta's long fins.
  • Bettas prefer gentle flow and calmer tanks; guppies are busy and active.
  • The betta will happily eat guppy fry.

If you want to try, use at least a 2–3 kaki planted tank, a calm short-finned betta (such as a plakat), and female guppies or plain-tailed guppies, and be ready to separate them. The safer choice is one or the other.

Cost in RM

  • Betta: ordinary bettas sell for around RM5–10, while contest-grade bettas sell for far more. A basic 1 kaki setup is cheap. See the betta types and price guide.
  • Guppy: common guppies are cheap; show-grade lines and rare strains cost more. A 2 kaki tank setup costs more than a 1 kaki betta tank, mainly because of the bigger tank, filter and stand.

Ongoing costs (food, anti klorin, electricity for the filter) are small for both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lives longer, betta or guppy? Bettas often live 2–4 years, and guppies often 1–3 years. Good water and diet help both.

Do bettas or guppies need a heater in Malaysia? Usually no. Normal Malaysian room temperature suits both. A heater is only useful in rooms kept air-conditioned for long periods.

How many guppies should I start with? Start with three to six in a 2 kaki tank. Choose all males if you don't want fry.
