Penutup Akuarium: Why Aquarium Lids Matter and DIY Lid Options

A penutup akuarium (aquarium lid) stops fish jumping out, keeps cats and curious kids out, slows evaporation and keeps dust and insects off the water. If you keep arowana, bettas, hatchetfish, killifish, eels or loaches, a lid is not optional: one jump overnight and you find the fish dry on the floor in the morning. The catch in Malaysia is heat. A fully sealed glass lid traps warm, humid air and can push the tank temperature up. The answer is usually a lid with some ventilation, or a mesh lid. Here's how to choose or make one.

Why Ikan Melompat Keluar (Why Fish Jump Out)

Fish jump for several reasons:

  • Natural behaviour: some species jump to catch insects or escape predators in the wild.
  • Stress: a new tank, aggressive tankmates or a sudden light switch-on can trigger a jump.
  • Poor water: high ammonia or low oxygen makes fish restless. Test the water if fish suddenly start jumping. See why aquarium fish die.
  • Water level too high, right up to the rim, makes escape easy.
  • Gaps around filter pipes, hang-on filters and cables.

Which Fish Need a Lid Most?

Fish Jump risk Notes
Arowana Very high Powerful jumpers; use a heavy, well-fitted lid. Many keepers weigh it down
Betta (ikan laga) High Jumps surprisingly well; a common way bettas are lost
Hatchetfish Very high Lives at the surface and jumps when startled
Killifish High Escapes through tiny gaps
Eels and spiny eels Very high Climb out through cable holes
Kuhli and other loaches Medium Can slither out of gaps
Gouramis, halfbeaks Medium Surface fish, jump when frightened
Shrimp Medium Can climb out along filter tubes or wet cables
Most tetras, rasboras, corydoras Low–medium Still jump when stressed

For bettas, read cara jaga ikan laga. Leave a gap of 3–5 cm between water and lid. Bettas and gouramis breathe air from the surface and need that warm, humid air layer.

Other Benefits of a Penutup Akuarium

  • Less evaporation. Uncovered tanks in warm, fan-cooled rooms can lose water quickly. See air akuarium berkurang.
  • Keeps out pets, insects and dust. Cats, geckos and cockroaches all end up in uncovered tanks.
  • Protects the light from splashes, and keeps salt creep or limescale down.
  • Child safety around open water.

The Heat Problem: Lids in Malaysian Rooms

A tight glass lid under an LED light traps heat. In a hot room, this can add a degree or two to the water temperature. To balance it:

  • Use a lid with ventilation gaps or a mesh section.
  • Lift the glass slightly on small spacers to let air escape.
  • If you use a kipas akuarium (cooling fan), it needs open water surface to work. Fans cool by evaporation, so a mesh lid or an open strip at one end is essential. See our cooling guide.
  • Watch the thermometer for a week after fitting a new lid.

Types of Aquarium Lid

Lid type Pros Cons Best for
Glass lid (sliding or hinged) Strong, clear, cuts evaporation Traps heat; heavy; needs clean edges Most tanks, arowana with care
Acrylic sheet Light, easy to cut Warps in heat over time; scratches Small tanks
Mesh lid (net screen) Great ventilation, works with fans More evaporation; light passes through mesh less evenly Jumpers in hot rooms, planted tanks
Hood with built-in light Neat, all-in-one Hard to upgrade the light Starter sets
Floating plants (partial) Calms surface fish Not a real barrier Extra comfort, not protection

Many tank sets come with a lid; others are sold bare. Check each listing in Glass Tanks to see whether a cover is included. Lid clips, mesh and other small parts often turn up under Other Special & Random Stuff.

Cara Buat Penutup Akuarium (DIY Options)

Option 1: DIY mesh lid (cheapest, coolest)

You need: aluminium window-screen frame or L-angle, fibreglass or plastic mesh, corner joints, and spline or cable ties.

  1. Measure the inside or outside rim of the tank, depending on whether the lid will sit inside or on top.
  2. Cut the frame pieces and join the corners.
  3. Stretch the mesh tight and fix it into the frame.
  4. Cut notches for the filter, heater cable, CO2 tube and feeding.
  5. Add small handles or a hinged feeding flap.

Mesh lets heat escape, works with cooling fans and lets you see most of the light through. Use plastic or aluminium, not ordinary steel mesh, which rusts.

Option 2: Cut glass or acrylic

A glass shop can cut sheets to size with polished edges. Ask for:

  • Two or three sliding pieces rather than one big sheet, so you can feed and maintain without lifting the lot.
  • A strip cut out at the back for filters and cables.
  • Polished, not raw, edges for safety.

Option 3: Cover the gaps on an existing lid

Most escapes happen through gaps, not the lid itself. Plug cable holes and gaps around hang-on filters with filter sponge or mesh, cut to fit.

Lid Tips for Arowana Owners

Arowana are strong jumpers, and a jump can injure them even if they land back in the tank.

  • Use a sturdy lid that covers the full surface, and weigh it down if needed.
  • Avoid switching lights on suddenly in a dark room. Turn on the room light first.
  • Keep tankmates calm and the water clean.
  • Keep the arowana's CITES certificate and microchip record safe. That's important regardless of lids.

FAQ

Do bettas need a lid?

Yes. Bettas can jump through small gaps. Leave a few centimetres of air between the water and the lid so they can breathe at the surface.

Will a lid overheat my tank?

A sealed glass lid can raise the temperature a little, especially with lights on top. Use a mesh section or leave ventilation gaps, and monitor with a thermometer.

Can I use a cooling fan with a lid?

Only if air can reach the water surface. A mesh lid or an open strip where the fan blows works best.
