Opae Ula

Opae Ula (Hawaiian Red Shrimp) – Halocaridina rubra

Bright red, healthy and active Opae Ula from Singapore. They’re tiny, hardy and very low-maintenance, so they’re great for beginners, sealed ecospheres, jars and nano tanks.

Why keep Opae Ula?

• Very hardy. They can live 10+ years with proper care.
• They eat algae and biofilm, so they need very little feeding.
• They’re peaceful and safe to keep with plants and snails.
• Their colour deepens to a rich red in a good setup.

Care guide

• Water: Brackish water, salinity around 1.008 – 1.015 SG. Use marine salt, not table salt.
• Temperature: 20 – 28°C.
• Size: Up to about 1.2 cm.
• Food: They mostly graze on algae. Give a tiny pinch of spirulina once in awhile. Overfeeding is the most common way people kill them.
• Setup: Live rock or lava rock and some light to give them algae to graze on.

Acclimation: Drip acclimate slowly.
