• Water Conditions: Endler Black Bar thrives in clean, well-filtered water with a temperature range of 22–28°C (72–82°F). They prefer a pH between 6.8 and 8.0 and a general hardness (GH) of 10–20 dGH. Regular weekly water changes of 25–30% are essential to maintain optimal water quality and prevent the buildup of nitrates. These fish are sensitive to sudden fluctuations in temperature and chemistry, so always acclimate them slowly using the drip method over 30–45 minutes. A reliable heater and thermometer are recommended to keep the water stable, as cooler temperatures can slow their metabolism and make them more susceptible to disease. While they are hardy, providing consistent, pristine conditions will ensure their black bar patterns remain vibrant and their overall health stays robust.
• Tank Size and Setup: A minimum tank size of 10 gallons (38 litres) is recommended for a small group of 5–6 Endler Black Bars. They are active swimmers and appreciate a well-planted aquarium with plenty of open swimming space in the middle and upper water columns. Dense planting with Java moss, Anubias, or Hornwort provides both shelter for fry and a natural aesthetic. A sandy or fine-grain substrate is ideal, and adding driftwood or smooth rocks creates additional hiding spots. Moderate lighting with floating plants like Duckweed or Salvinia will help diffuse light and mimic their natural habitat in Venezuela. Ensure a secure lid, as Endler's livebearers are known jumpers when startled.
• Diet and Feeding Habits: Endler Black Bar is an omnivorous species with a hearty appetite. In the wild, they primarily consume insect larvae, algae, and small crustaceans. In captivity, offer a varied diet consisting of high-quality micro-pellets or crushed flake food as a staple. Supplement with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, microworms, and bloodworms at least 2–3 times per week to enhance colouration and promote breeding condition. They also graze on biofilm and algae naturally growing in the tank. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily, only what they can consume within 2–3 minutes. Overfeeding leads to poor water quality and obesity, so portion control is crucial.
• Tank Mates: Endler Black Bar is a peaceful, social fish that does best in groups of 5 or more. They are incredibly versatile and can be housed with other nano community species such as neon tetras, ember tetras, chili rasboras, pygmy corydoras, and otocinclus catfish. They also coexist well with dwarf shrimp like cherry shrimp or amano shrimp, as they pose no threat to adult shrimp and only occasionally chase fry. Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive, or fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, angelfish, or cichlids, which will stress them and potentially harm them. Male Endler Black Bars can sometimes display mild competitive behaviour toward other males, but this is harmless and simply involves showing off their fins to attract females. A ratio of one male to two or three females is recommended to reduce stress on females during breeding.
• Care and Maintenance: Endler Black Bar is exceptionally easy to care for, making it a top choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. They are highly adaptable and resilient to minor fluctuations, but regular tank maintenance is still vital. Perform a 25–30% water change weekly, wipe down any algae growth on glass, and clean the filter media monthly in tank water (never tap water) to preserve beneficial bacteria. Monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels with a test kit weekly to ensure parameters remain within safe ranges (ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, nitrate below 20 ppm). They are prone to common fish ailments like ich and fin rot if water quality drops, so quarantine new arrivals and maintain stable conditions to prevent outbreaks.
• Breeding and Behaviour: Endler Black Bar is a prolific livebearer that breeds readily in home aquariums. Females give birth to 10–20 free-swimming fry every 4–6 weeks after a gestation period of about 24 days. The black bar pattern is most prominent in males, which are smaller and more colourful, while females are larger and more subdued in hue. To protect fry from being eaten by the adults, provide dense plant cover or use a breeder box. Fry can be raised on crushed flakes, micro-powder food, or freshly hatched brine shrimp. They grow to full size (about 2–3 cm) within 3–4 months and begin breeding shortly after. Keep in mind that Endler Black Bar can interbreed with other Endler varieties and guppies, so isolate them if you wish to maintain pure breeding lines.
