Horned Nerite snails are a smaller freshwater snail species, reaching a maximum size of about 0.5 – 0.8 inches (1.5 – 2 cm) in the aquarium setting.
Though these shells mostly feature natural-looking colors like yellow and dark (aperture white, apex often red), they each feature different colorizations and patterns. This makes each snail a wonder and beautiful addition to any tank.
Typically, they will grow live between 2 to 5 years, depending on their adventure to your tank, acclimation, stress and of course feeding.
Tank Mates:
Community Fish: Hornet Nerite Snails peacefully coexist with most community fish, such as tetras, guppies, rasboras, and platies.
Shrimp: They are compatible with peaceful shrimp species like Cherry Shrimp, Amano Shrimp, and Ghost Shrimp.
Snails: Hornet Nerite Snails can be housed with other snail species, including Mystery Snails and Rabbit Snails, as long as there is sufficient space and food available.
Feeding Habit:
Algae Consumption: Hornet Nerite Snails are voracious algae eaters and will actively graze on algae growth in the aquarium, helping to keep the tank clean and free from excessive algae.
Supplemental Feeding: In addition to algae, these snails can be provided with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini or spinach), and commercial snail-specific food. Offer a varied diet to ensure their nutritional needs are met.
Care:
Tank Setup: Provide plenty of hiding spots and surfaces for the Hornet Nerite Snail to explore and graze. Use smooth substrate to prevent damage to their delicate foot and shell.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, as excessive light can promote excessive algae growth.
Water Quality: Regularly monitor water parameters, conduct routine water changes, and ensure adequate filtration to maintain optimal water quality for the snails.
Acclimation: When introducing Hornet Nerite Snails to a new aquarium, it's crucial to acclimate them slowly to prevent stress. Float the bag in the tank for 15-20 minutes, then gradually add small amounts of aquarium water to the bag over a period of time before releasing the snails into the tank.
With its striking appearance, effective algae control, and peaceful nature, the Hornet Nerite Snail is a delightful and practical addition to any aquarium. Enjoy the beauty and functionality of these snails as they help maintain a balanced and thriving aquatic ecosystem.
