Marine invertebrates are the saltwater animals without a backbone: shrimp, snails, crabs, starfish (bintang laut), sea urchins (landak laut), anemones, feather dusters and more. In a reef tank they do real work, grazing algae, cleaning up leftover food and stirring the sand. Many are also stunning display animals in their own right. FishyHub lists marine invertebrates from reef shops and saltwater sellers across Malaysia, with prices in RM.
This category suits everyone from a nano reef keeper buying a few snails to an experienced reefer looking for a show anemone for a clownfish pair. Care needs vary hugely, though. A turbo snail and a harlequin shrimp have almost nothing in common, so check each animal before you add it to the cart.
Cleaner, fire, peppermint, pistol and sexy shrimp are the most popular. Most are peaceful scavengers, but a few are specialist feeders. See the Marine Shrimp category for more detail.
Turbo, trochus, cerith, nerite and nassarius snails form the core of most cleanup crews. Different species graze different surfaces, so a mix works better than lots of one kind.
Small hermit crabs and emerald crabs are common cleanup choices. Larger crabs can be opportunistic and may go after snails, shrimp or even sleeping fish, so pick species with a good reef record.
Sand-sifting stars, brittle stars and the eye-catching linckia stars. Many have specialised diets and do poorly in a new tank, so these are for mature systems only.
Excellent algae grazers. Urchins can knock over loose frags or carry them around, so glue your corals down.
Bubble tip anemones and other hosts are popular with clownfish (ikan badut) keepers. They need strong, stable lighting, a mature tank and protection from pumps they can wander into.
Feather dusters, sea cucumbers (timun laut) and other specialist animals appear depending on what sellers have in stock.
| Tank | Approx. volume | Good starting choices |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kaki nano (30 cm) | about 12–15 L | A few small snails, one sexy shrimp |
| 2 kaki (60 cm) | about 55–65 L | Snail mix, small hermits, a cleaner shrimp |
| 3 kaki (90 cm) | about 155–180 L | Full cleanup crew, pair of cleaner shrimp, urchin, bubble tip anemone in a mature tank |
| 4 kaki and up (120 cm+) | about 230 L+ | Larger crews, sand-sifting stars and sea cucumbers once the sand bed is mature |
Small tanks swing quickly in temperature and salinity, so stock them lightly even though the animals are tiny.
Temperature. Most reef invertebrates are comfortable at about 24–27°C. Malaysian homes sit at 26–31°C, and tanks can creep past 30°C during a heatwave. Shrimp, starfish and anemones handle heat stress badly, so a chiller is close to essential. Keep the tank away from windows and direct sunlight.
Water. Mix salt and top up with RO water, never chlorinated air paip. Invertebrates are more sensitive than fish to swings in salinity, so an auto top-off or daily top-ups help in our warm climate, where evaporation is fast.
Medication. Copper and many fish medications kill invertebrates. Treat sick fish in a separate hospital tank.
Power cuts. Anemones and starfish suffer quickly when flow stops. A battery air pump and a small battery powerhead are cheap insurance.
Wild collection. Don't collect animals from beaches or reefs. Malaysia's marine parks are protected, and shore animals rarely adapt to aquariums. Buy from sellers who source legally.
Check the exact species name, especially for crabs and starfish, where similar-looking animals behave very differently. Note the size, and whether the listing is per piece or a bundle such as a cleanup crew pack. Ask the seller how long the animal has been in their system, and whether the photo shows the actual animal. Invertebrates need slow drip acclimation, so plan to be home when the order arrives. Check delivery or self-collect options and each listing's live-arrival policy, and ask before ordering to East Malaysia.
No. Clownfish live happily without one. If you want an anemone, choose a natural host species and wait until the tank is mature and stable.
A mix of snails, small hermit crabs and shrimp that eat algae, detritus and leftover food. It helps with maintenance but doesn't replace water changes or a skimmer.
Wait until the tank has cycled and ammonia and nitrite read zero. Start with hardy snails and hermits, and add sensitive animals such as starfish and anemones months later.
