Malaysia celebrates a lot of festivals, and plants are part of many of them. Festive plants are seasonal pokok hiasan chosen to decorate the home, brighten an office reception or give as a gift during the holidays. They range from traditional good-luck plants to colourful potted blooms that match the season.
This category suits anyone decorating for open house, looking for a living gift instead of cut flowers, or refreshing a planted corner for the new year. FishyHub lists festive plants from Malaysian sellers, with sizes, pots and prices in RM shown on each listing. What's available changes with the season, so check back as each festival approaches.
Plants linked to prosperity and good fortune are popular gifts, such as potted mandarin orange trees (pokok limau), lucky bamboo arrangements, pussy willow and plants with red or gold accents. Many are sold in decorative pots ready for display.
Fresh green foliage and flowering plants are a natural way to welcome guests during open house. Neat potted plants by the door or on the dining table add colour without much fuss.
Bright marigolds, jasmine and other cheerful flowering plants suit the festival of lights and pair well with kolam and lamp decorations.
Poinsettias with red bracts, small conifers and other seasonal plants are popular for decorating homes and offices at the end of the year.
| Situation | What helps |
|---|---|
| Indoors for the festival | Place near a bright window, away from aircon vents, and water when the top soil is dry. |
| After the festival | Move outdoor plants (e.g. mandarin orange trees) back to a sunny balcony or garden gradually. |
| Fruit and flowers dropping | Usually stress from moving, low light or over- or under-watering; keep conditions steady. |
| Decorative pots without holes | Don't let water pool at the bottom; tip out excess or repot after the festival. |
| Monsoon season | Bring delicate plants under cover during heavy rain and wind. |
Many festive plants are grown in nurseries in ideal conditions, then moved into homes that are either very warm and humid or chilly and dry from air-conditioning. Both can cause leaves, flowers or fruit to drop. Give plants a bright spot, avoid direct afternoon sun through glass, and don't place them right under a running aircon unit.
The year-end festive season often coincides with monsoon rain in many parts of Malaysia. If you keep plants on an open balcony or porch, make sure pots drain well and empty saucers so water doesn't sit and breed mosquitoes.
Lucky bamboo in water is easy to care for, but change the water regularly. Tap water is chlorinated, so many growers let it stand overnight (endap air) before topping up.
Before ordering, check each listing for:
Demand peaks just before major festivals, so order early and confirm the expected delivery date with the seller. Larger plants such as fruiting trees may be self-collect only, and delivery to Sabah and Sarawak may take longer.
Many can. Mandarin orange trees, poinsettias and lucky bamboo can all be kept for years with the right light and watering.
Not all of them. Some, such as poinsettias, can irritate pets if chewed. Check the specific plant if you have cats or dogs.
