Air plants are Tillandsia, a group of bromeliads that grow without soil. In nature they cling to trees and rocks, taking in water and nutrients through tiny scales on their leaves. That makes them a very easy kind of pokok hiasan: no pots, no soil, just light, water and good airflow.
They suit small homes, office desks, terrariums and paludariums, and they look great on driftwood next to an aquarium. FishyHub lists air plants from Malaysian sellers, with species, sizes and prices in RM shown on each listing.
Small, spiky rosettes that blush red or pink before flowering. The most common starter air plant.
A large, silvery plant with curling leaves, often used as a centrepiece. It is slow-growing and usually costs more.
Long, hanging grey strands that drape over branches or frames. It loves humidity and airflow.
Sellers may also offer T. caput-medusae, T. bulbosa, T. stricta and many others. Silver, fuzzy-leaved types tolerate more light and dryness; greener, smoother types prefer more shade and moisture.
| Care point | What works in Malaysia |
|---|---|
| Light | Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh afternoon sun through glass. |
| Water | Mist several times a week, or soak for 20–30 minutes about once a week; more often in air-conditioned rooms. |
| Drying | Shake off excess water and let the plant dry within a few hours, upside down if possible. |
| Airflow | Essential. Don't seal them in closed jars. |
| Fertiliser | Optional; a very weak bromeliad or air plant fertiliser once a month. |
| Beginner-friendly? | Yes, once you get the watering rhythm right. |
Air plants are not aquatic plants, despite what some listings suggest. They should not be submerged in a fish tank, and leaving them in water causes the base to rot. They can, however, be placed around an aquarium or paludarium:
Make sure they get air movement and can dry between waterings. A tank lid that traps constant condensation over the plant is too wet.
Malaysia's humidity is close to the natural climate of many Tillandsia, so they grow well on shaded balconies and covered patios. Watch for these local issues:
Check each listing for the species, the plant's size, whether a holder or mount is included, and whether the photo shows the actual plant. Air plants ship well because they need no soil, which makes them easier than live fish to send to Sabah and Sarawak; still check delivery time with the seller.
Usually rot from staying wet too long. Dry it upside down after watering and improve airflow.
Yes, once in their life. After flowering, they produce small offsets (pups) that grow into new plants.
