The bubble eye is one of the strangest and most charming fancy goldfish. It has no dorsal fin, and two soft, fluid-filled sacs sit under its upward-facing eyes, wobbling as it swims. Malaysian keepers simply call it ikan emas bubble eye, and it is a favourite with people who want a goldfish that looks like nothing else in the tank.
Bubble eyes are not hard to feed or keep alive, but they are delicate. They suit a calm, dedicated goldfish tank rather than a busy community setup. FishyHub lists bubble eye goldfish from Malaysian sellers, with prices in RM and photos to compare sac size and symmetry.
Young fish have small sacs that grow over months, so a juvenile in a listing may look quite different once it matures.
| Care point | Guide |
|---|---|
| Temperature | About 20–26°C is ideal. Malaysian rooms run 26–31°C, so keep the tank shaded, aerated and cooled with a fan if it creeps past 30°C. |
| Minimum tank | 2 kaki (60 cm, about 55–65 L) for a pair; go bigger for more fish. |
| Filtration | Gentle but efficient. A sponge filter, or a cover over any filter intake. |
| Temperament | Very peaceful and slow. |
| Diet | Sinking pellets and gel food, soaked first; blanched peas; occasional frozen foods. |
| Beginner-friendly? | For careful beginners only. The sacs damage easily. |
The sacs are the weak point. A torn sac usually heals and refills, but it can become infected and may never regrow evenly. To keep your bubble eye safe:
Because they look upward and see poorly, bubble eyes can be slow to find food. Feed where they can reach it easily, and watch that faster fish don't eat everything first.
Treat every top-up and water change with anti klorin, as Malaysian tap water is chlorinated. Warm water holds less oxygen, so keep an air stone running and aim for regular partial water changes. If your area has frequent power cuts, a small battery air pump is worth having for a goldfish tank.
Look for a clear photo or video of the actual fish, so you can see both sacs. Check the size given, where the seller is located, whether they deliver or offer self-collect, and what their live-arrival terms are. For Sabah and Sarawak, ask the seller first; delivery to East Malaysia takes longer. Price in RM depends mainly on sac size, symmetry, colour and overall body shape.
Usually around 10–15 cm including the tail, which is a little smaller than most orandas.
Not special, but easy to reach. Sinking pellets or gel food that settles on the bottom works better than floating flakes they struggle to see.
