Iwagumi is the minimalist style of aquascaping: a few carefully placed stones, a low green carpet and lots of empty water. It looks effortless, but every rock is placed with intention. Stones are the heart of an Iwagumi. A classic layout uses one main stone, the largest and most striking, with smaller supporting stones that follow its angle and texture. Using one type of rock keeps the scene unified.
Rinse all stones well, and test water a week after adding them if your livestock is sensitive.
The carpet makes the stones look like hills on a meadow. Popular options include Monte Carlo, dwarf hairgrass, Glossostigma and Marsilea. Monte Carlo and dwarf hairgrass are the usual first choices; Glossostigma is fussier.

Carpets are usually grown in aquarium soil with a "dry start" or with water and CO2. Check whether CO2 equipment is part of the pack you are looking at.
Iwagumi traditionally features one school of small fish so the scene stays calm, for example a group of rasboras or small tetras, plus cherry or Amano shrimp for algae. Malaysia has native small rasboras such as Boraras, which suit the style well. Avoid diggers and large fish that uproot the carpet.
Check the rock type and total weight, the carpet plant species and how much is included, the soil, lighting and whether CO2 parts come with it. Ask whether photos are of the actual stones you will receive. Rocks are heavy, so compare delivery or self-collect options with the seller.

Newly planted carpets often lose some leaves while adjusting. Persistent melting usually points to high temperature, too little light or CO2, or soil that has run low on nutrients.
It is one of the harder styles to keep neat. Beginners can succeed with patience, but Serenity or Jungle packs are more forgiving first tanks.
