Kenapa Udang Hiasan Mati? Molting Problems & Sudden Shrimp Deaths
Kenapa udang hiasan mati? In most Malaysian tanks the answer is one of six things: a failed molt caused by the wrong GH/KH, copper from fish medicine, a heat spike above 30°C, a large water change that shocked them, pesticide on new plants, or chlorine from untreated air paip (tap water). Shrimp are far more sensitive than fish, so a tank where your guppies look perfectly happy can still kill udang hiasan. Use the table below to narrow down the cause, then fix the root problem before you add more shrimp.
Kenapa Udang Hiasan Mati: Quick Diagnosis Table
| What you see | Most likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Dead shrimp with a white band between head and body | Failed molt ("white ring of death") | Test GH and KH; stop big water changes |
| Several deaths within hours of adding something | Copper, pesticide or chlorine | Change 30–50% with conditioned water; add carbon |
| Deaths on hot afternoons | Temperature above 28–30°C | Add fan, move tank out of sun |
| Shrimp die a day or two after a big water change | Sudden change in GH, pH or temperature | Smaller, matched water changes |
| New shrimp die within a week, old ones fine | Poor acclimatisation or transport stress | Drip-acclimatise slowly |
| Shrimp swimming frantically, then dying | Ammonia/nitrite, or toxin | Test ammonia and nitrite immediately |
| Slow trickle of deaths over weeks | Old age, low food, or chronic water issue | Check parameters, feeding, biofilm |
1. Failed Molts (Udang Gagal Salin Kulit)
Shrimp grow by shedding their shell. A healthy molt takes seconds; the shrimp backs out of the old shell and hides while the new one hardens. When a molt fails, the shrimp gets stuck and dies, often showing a pale ring around the middle. Hobbyists call this the white ring of death.
Common reasons:
- GH too low: shrimp need calcium and magnesium to build a new shell. Much Malaysian tap water is soft, so Neocaridina in an unmineralised tank can struggle.
- GH too high or changing: sudden jumps confuse molting just as much as low levels.
- Big water changes: a 50% change with water of different hardness can trigger many shrimp to molt at once, and some fail.
- Poor diet: little calcium or protein in food.
Fix: test GH and KH with a proper kit from water test kits. Aim for about GH 6–10 for cherry shrimp or GH 4–6 for crystal shrimp, and use a shrimp mineral supplement if yours is low. Then keep it steady.
2. Copper and Medications
Copper is deadly to shrimp even at tiny doses. Many fish treatments for white spot, velvet and parasites contain copper, and some plant fertilisers do too. Read the label of every product before it goes into a tank with shrimp. If you must treat fish, move them to a separate hospital tank.
If copper went in by mistake, do a large water change with conditioned water and run activated carbon to pull out what remains.
3. Heat Spikes
Malaysian rooms sit at about 26–31°C, and tanks near windows can get hotter. Cherry shrimp manage up to about 28°C comfortably, but crystal red and other Caridina do best at 22–25°C. Above 30°C, oxygen drops and stress climbs, and deaths often show up in the afternoon during heatwaves.
What helps:
- Move the tank away from direct sunlight
- Run a kipas akuarium (clip-on fan) across the surface
- Add an air stone for oxygen
- Use a chiller for Caridina tanks in non-aircond rooms
4. Large or Mismatched Water Changes
Shrimp prefer small, regular water changes (10–15% weekly) over occasional big ones. When topping up, match the temperature and treat the water first with anti klorin. Malaysia's drinking-water standard from the Ministry of Health allows free residual chlorine up to 5 mg/L, which is safe for people but harmful to shrimp gills. Read our anti klorin and tap water guide for the details, and find conditioners under water conditioners and additives.
Pour new water slowly, or drip it in, so the shrimp never feel a sudden change.
5. Pesticides on Plants
Many aquarium plants are grown on farms that use pesticides. Fish usually shrug it off, but shrimp can die within hours. This catches a lot of people: they add a new plant and lose the colony the next day.
- Buy tissue-culture (in-vitro) plants where possible
- Soak potted plants in a bucket of conditioned water for a few days, changing it daily
- Ask the seller whether the plant has been treated
6. Ammonia, Nitrite and an Immature Tank
Shrimp added to a newly set-up tank often die because the tank never cycled or has no biofilm yet. Even a small ammonia reading hurts them. Overfeeding has the same effect in an established tank: leftover food rots and spikes ammonia.
Test ammonia and nitrite. If either is above zero, change water and cut feeding. If the tank is new, see cara cycle akuarium and the shrimp tank setup guide.
Other Causes to Rule Out
- Transport stress: shrimp sent by courier across states can arrive weak. Drip-acclimatise over 45–90 minutes.
- Insecticide spray in the room (mosquito sprays, fogging): cover the tank or switch off the air pump while spraying, since the pump draws room air into the water.
- Predators: fish, planaria and hydra. See planaria and hydra in shrimp tanks.
- Old age: cherry shrimp live roughly 1–2 years, so the odd death in an old colony is normal.
Step-by-Step Rescue Plan
- Remove dead shrimp straight away.
- Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH, KH and temperature. Write the numbers down.
- Think about what changed in the last 48 hours: new plant, medicine, fertiliser, spray, water change.
- If a toxin is likely, change 30–50% with matched, conditioned water and add activated carbon.
- If GH is wrong, correct it slowly over days, not in one go.
- Cool the tank if it's above 28°C.
- Hold off adding new shrimp until deaths stop for at least two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Kenapa udang cherry mati selepas tukar air?
Is it normal for shrimp to die after molting?
No. A shed shell (it looks like a whole clear shrimp) is normal and healthy. A dead shrimp half out of its shell is a failed molt and points to water hardness or stress.
Can I use fish medicine in a shrimp tank?
Only if the label says it is shrimp-safe. Anything with copper will kill shrimp. Treat fish in a separate tank where possible.
How many shrimp deaths are normal?
In a healthy colony you should rarely see bodies, because shrimp eat their dead quickly. More than one or two a week means something is wrong.
