Top Filter vs Canister Filter: Which Is Better for Your Tank in Malaysia?
In the top filter vs canister filter choice, the short answer is this: a top filter (filter atas) is cheaper, easier to clean and adds lots of oxygen, which makes it the classic choice for goldfish, arowana and messy fish in Malaysian homes. A canister filter (external filter) is quieter, hides under the cabinet and keeps the top of the tank clear, which makes it the favourite for planted tanks and aquascapes. Neither is "the best aquarium filter in Malaysia" for everyone. Pick based on your fish, your tank size in kaki and how often you're willing to clean.
Top Filter vs Canister Filter: Quick Comparison
| Factor | Top filter (filter atas) | Canister / external filter |
|---|---|---|
| Where it sits | Tray on top of the tank | In the cabinet, connected by hoses |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| Noise | Trickling water sound; can be noisy | Usually very quiet |
| Gas exchange / oxygen | Excellent (water trickles through air) | Lower; may need an air stone or spray bar at surface |
| CO2 for plants | Drives off CO2 | Keeps CO2 in; better for planted tanks |
| Media capacity | Moderate | Large |
| Cleaning | Very easy; lift the lid, rinse | More work; disconnect, open, prime |
| Visual look | Bulky tray takes top space | Clean top; only pipes visible |
| Lid and lighting | Blocks part of the top | Leaves space for full-length lights |
| Leak risk | Low (water stays above tank) | Hose/seal leaks possible |
| Evaporation | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Goldfish, arowana, cichlids, oscar, messy fish | Planted tanks, aquascapes, community tanks |
How Each Filter Works
Top filter
A top filter is a long tray that sits on top of the tank. A small pump in the tank pushes water up into the tray, where it trickles down through layers of wool, sponge and bio media before falling back into the tank. Because water drips through open air, it picks up lots of oxygen. FishyHub lists top filters for 2, 3 and 4 kaki tanks from Malaysian sellers.
Our top filter guide covers setup in detail.
Canister filter
A canister filter sits in the cabinet below the tank. An intake pipe draws water down, it flows through baskets of media inside a sealed canister, and an outflow pipe returns it to the tank. Since it's sealed, it's quiet and doesn't lose water to evaporation. Browse external filters for options.
Read the external filter guide by tank size for flow rates per kaki.
Noise
If your tank is in a bedroom, noise matters. Top filters make a constant trickling sound. You can reduce it by keeping the water level close to the tray outlet and packing the media evenly, but it's rarely silent. Canister filters are usually very quiet once primed and bled of air, though a worn impeller can rattle.
Oxygen and the Malaysian Heat
Malaysian tanks often run at 28–31°C, and warm water holds less oxygen. This is a real point in favour of top filters. Their trickle action oxygenates water well, which is why many local keepers of goldfish and big fish swear by them.
With a canister, aim the outflow or spray bar to ripple the surface, or add a pam udara (air pump) with an air stone. During power cuts, both filters stop; a battery air pump is good insurance either way. The air pump guide covers the options.
Planted Tanks and Aquascapes
For a planted tank with injected CO2, a canister is the better choice. A top filter splashes water through the air and drives off the CO2 you're paying for. A canister also leaves the top of the tank clear for a full-length LED and a neat, rimless look. See CO2 aquascape setup.
Maintenance
Top filter: lift the lid, rinse the wool and sponges in old tank water, replace filter wool when it's clogged. It takes minutes and you can see how dirty it is. This suits messy fish that clog media quickly.
Canister: close the taps, disconnect, carry it to a sink or bucket, open it, rinse media in old tank water, check the seal ring, reassemble and prime. It takes longer, so most people clean canisters less often (every 1–2 months for a lightly stocked tank).
Either way, never rinse bio media under tap water. Chlorine kills the beneficial bacteria. The beneficial bacteria guide explains why.
Cost per Kaki
We won't quote specific RM prices because they change between brands and sellers, but the pattern is consistent:
| Tank size | Top filter | Canister |
|---|---|---|
| 2 kaki (~55–65 L) | Cheapest option; often sold with the tank set | Small canister costs more |
| 3 kaki (~155–180 L) | Still affordable; good for goldfish | Mid-range canister; popular for planted tanks |
| 4 kaki (~230–270 L) | Long tray; popular for arowana and big fish | Large canister costs significantly more |
| 5–6 kaki | Usually paired with a sump | Often two canisters |
Running costs (electricity and replacement wool or sponges) are similar.
Who Should Pick Which?
Choose a top filter if you:
- keep goldfish, oscars, large cichlids, arowana or other messy fish
- want the cheapest, simplest option
- like being able to check and clean media easily
- want maximum oxygen in a warm room
Choose a canister filter if you:
- have a planted tank or aquascape, especially with CO2
- want a quiet tank in a bedroom or office
- want a clean top with full-length lighting
- prefer less frequent maintenance
Many keepers with big tanks use both: a top filter for oxygen and easy mechanical filtration, plus a canister for extra bio capacity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a top filter on a planted tank?
You can for low-tech plants without CO2. If you inject CO2, a canister is better because a top filter drives the CO2 out.
Which filter is better for a 2 kaki tank?
For most beginners a top filter or hang-on filter is enough and cheaper. Choose a small canister if you want a quiet tank or a planted aquascape.
Do canister filters leak?
They can if the seal ring is dirty, dry or damaged, or if hoses aren't clamped. Check the O-ring every time you clean and lubricate it with silicone grease.
