External Filter Akuarium (Canister) Guide: Choosing by Tank Size in Kaki
An external filter akuarium (canister filter) sits in the cabinet under your tank, pulls water down through a sealed canister of media, and pumps it back up. To choose one, match it to your tank in kaki: aim for a rated flow of about 4–6 times the tank volume per hour for community and planted tanks, and 6–10 times for goldfish, cichlids and other messy fish. Then check the media volume, since bigger baskets mean more room for bacteria. As a guide, a 2 kaki tank needs roughly 300–500 L/h, a 3 kaki 700–1,200 L/h, and a canister filter for a 4 feet aquarium around 1,200–2,000 L/h. Canisters are quiet and hidden, which is why planted-tank keepers love them, but they need careful priming and seal checks to avoid leaks.
Canister Filter Size by Tank (Kaki)
| Tank size | Real water volume | Suggested rated flow (L/h)* | Media volume to look for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 kaki | ~28 L | 200–300 | 1–2 L | Small canisters or hang-on filters often simpler |
| 2 kaki | ~55 L | 300–500 | 2–3 L | Entry-level canister |
| 2.5 kaki | ~80–100 L | 500–700 | 3–4 L | |
| 3 kaki | ~155 L | 700–1,200 | 4–8 L | Most popular canister size |
| 4 kaki | ~230 L | 1,200–2,000 | 8–12 L | Large canister or two medium ones |
| 5 kaki | ~350 L | 1,800–3,000 | 12 L+ | Two canisters, or canister + top filter |
| 6 kaki | ~550 L | 2,500–4,500 | 15 L+ | Usually two canisters or a sump |
*Rated flow on the box is measured with no media and no hoses. Real flow is often 30–50% lower, so size up rather than down. Volumes based on standard Malaysian tank sizes; see akuarium 2, 3 & 4 kaki.
How a Canister Filter Works
- Water enters through an intake strainer in the tank.
- It flows down a hose into the canister in the cabinet.
- Inside, it passes through baskets of media, usually in this order: coarse sponge, bio media (rings, balls), fine sponge or filter wool.
- An impeller at the top pumps clean water back up through the outflow pipe or spray bar.
Because the canister is sealed, it's quiet and doesn't add evaporation. For media layering, see the filter media order guide.
What to Look For When Buying an External Filter Akuarium
- Real flow, not just rated flow: reviews and other keepers' experience help.
- Media capacity: more litres of media = more bacteria and longer between cleans.
- Taps (valves) on the hoses: let you disconnect without draining.
- Self-priming or priming button: makes start-up much easier.
- Hose size: 12/16 mm on small units, 16/22 mm on larger ones. Bigger hoses mean more flow.
- Spare parts: impellers, seal rings and hoses wear out. Choose a brand whose parts you can find locally under filter accessories.
- Inline extras: some have built-in UV or heaters.

Setup and Priming Step by Step
- Rinse media in conditioned water (never tap water with chlorine if it's seeded).
- Load baskets in the order the manual suggests.
- Place the canister below the tank. It must sit lower than the water level so gravity helps fill it.
- Cut hoses to length without kinks, and clamp them firmly.
- Fit the intake and outflow in the tank. Put a sponge pre-filter on the intake if you keep shrimp or small fish.
- Prime: open the taps and use the priming button, or suck the outflow hose to start a siphon until water fills the canister.
- Plug in only once the canister is full. Running it dry damages the impeller.
- Burp out air: tilt or gently rock the canister until bubbles stop and the noise settles.
Leak Prevention
Leaks are the main worry with canister filters, especially in condos and upstairs units. Most come from:
- Dry or dirty O-ring seal: clean it and apply silicone grease every time you open the filter
- Hoses popping off: use hose clamps and avoid sharp bends
- Cracked lid or clips not locked: check every clip clicks shut
- Old hoses: replace them when they harden or crack
Put a plastic tray under the canister and check the cabinet floor with a hand torch the day after every clean. The condo aquarium guide has more tips for flats.
Cleaning Schedule
| Task | How often |
|---|---|
| Rinse intake strainer and pre-filter sponge | Weekly–fortnightly |
| Open canister, rinse sponges in old tank water | Every 1–2 months (sooner for messy fish) |
| Replace filter wool / fine pad | When clogged or every 1–2 months |
| Rinse bio media gently | Every 3–6 months, only if clogged |
| Clean impeller and hoses | Every 3–6 months |
| Replace O-ring seal | When cracked or flattened |
Don't clean the filter on the same day as a big water change. Spacing them out protects the bacteria. Rinse media only in old tank water, never under the tap; chlorine kills beneficial bacteria. Read cara cuci filter for a full walkthrough.
Malaysian Considerations
- Heat and oxygen: canisters don't splash, so oxygen exchange is lower. In 28–31°C water, point the outflow or spray bar to ripple the surface, or add a pam udara with an air stone from air pumps.
- Power cuts: when power returns, most canisters restart on their own, but check for air locks. After a long outage, the water inside may have gone stale; some keepers rinse the canister before restarting. Our power outage guide covers this.
- Soft tap water: much of Malaysia's water is soft with low KH. Adding a small bag of crushed coral to the canister can help stabilise pH for livebearers or African cichlids.
When a Canister Beats a Top Filter
- Planted tanks with CO2: canisters don't drive off CO2
- Aquascapes: leaves the top clear for lighting and a clean look
- Bedrooms and offices: quieter operation
- Larger media volume: better bio capacity for heavier stocking
Browse all aquarium filters if you're still deciding. A top filter still wins for messy fish where easy cleaning matters, and for maximum oxygen. Compare them in top filter vs canister filter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Kenapa external filter saya bocor?
Biasanya kerana getah O-ring kering, kotor atau rosak, atau paip tidak diketatkan dengan klip. Bersihkan getah dan sapu gris silikon setiap kali buka filter, dan periksa semua klip ditutup rapat.
How often should I clean a canister filter?
Every 1–2 months for most community tanks, more often for goldfish or big fish. Clean the intake sponge more often to keep flow strong.
Why is my canister filter noisy?
Usually trapped air or a dirty impeller. Rock the canister gently to release air, and clean the impeller and its shaft.
Can I use a canister filter on a 2 kaki tank?
Yes. A small canister works well for 2 kaki planted tanks. For a budget beginner setup, a hang-on or top filter is cheaper and simpler.
