Penyakit Ikan Mata Menonjol (Pop Eye): Causes & Treatment
Penyakit ikan mata menonjol, or pop eye (exophthalmia), is when one or both of a fish's eyes swell and bulge out of the socket. The first question to ask is simple: is it one eye or both? One bulging eye usually means an injury. Both eyes usually means a water-quality problem or an infection inside the body. Most cases get better with clean water and patience, and only some need ubat ikan. This guide walks you through it.
What Pop Eye Looks Like
- The eye sticks out further than normal, sometimes a lot
- A cloudy or white ring around the eye, or a cloudy eye surface
- Swelling behind the eye, making it look pushed forward
- Sometimes redness or blood in the eye
- In severe cases, the eye can rupture or be lost
Don't confuse pop eye with breeds that have bulging eyes by design: telescope-eye and bubble eye goldfish, and black moor. If the eyes have always looked like that and are even, it's normal for the breed.
One Eye vs Both Eyes
| One eye (unilateral) | Both eyes (bilateral) | |
|---|---|---|
| Most likely cause | Injury: hit on decor, netting, fighting, jumping | Poor water, bacterial infection, internal illness |
| Spread risk | Low | Possible if infection; other fish may follow |
| First action | Clean water, reduce stress, check decor | Test water, big water changes, consider medicine |
| Outlook | Usually good, slow recovery | Depends on cause; worse if body also swells |
Injury (usually one eye)
Fish bump into sharp rocks, rough driftwood or the glass when startled. Bettas flaring at their reflection, fish fighting, rough handling with a net or fish being bagged for delivery can all cause it. Fluid builds behind the damaged eye. With clean water, it often heals on its own over a few weeks.
Water quality and infection (usually both eyes)
High ammonia, nitrite or nitrate, or a big swing in pH, stress the fish and let bacteria take hold. If both eyes swell and the fish is also bloated with raised scales, it may be part of dropsy, which is more serious. See our penyakit sisik nanas guide.
Penyakit Ikan Mata Menonjol: Treatment Step by Step
1. Test and fix the water
Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH with a water test kit. Do a 25–50% water change with water treated with anti klorin and matched to tank temperature. Repeat smaller changes every few days. Clean water alone fixes many cases.
2. Remove sharp decor
Check for sharp edges on rocks, ornaments and driftwood. Run a stocking over decor: if it snags, it can injure fish.
3. Isolate if needed
If the fish is being bullied, or you need to medicate, move it to a hospital tank with an air stone and a lid.
4. Epsom salt bath or hospital-tank dose
Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is widely used by hobbyists to help reduce swelling. A commonly used level in a hospital tank is about 1 tablespoon per 20 litres, dissolved first and added slowly. Some keepers start lower. This is not garam ikan (sodium chloride), and it should not go into a planted main tank.
5. Antibiotics only when needed
If both eyes are affected, the eye looks cloudy or infected, or the fish shows other signs (not eating, red streaks, bloating), an antibacterial fish medicine may be needed. Pick one from fish medication, dose for the real water volume and finish the course. Don't add antibiotics "just in case" to a tank with a one-eye injury, because that can harm your filter bacteria.
6. Be patient
Swelling takes weeks to go down, even when the cause is fixed. Cloudiness may clear before the bulge does. Some fish are left with a slightly enlarged or blind eye, but live normally.
Koi and Pond Fish: Ikan Koi Mata Keluar
In ikan koi, a single swollen eye is often from netting, jumping or hitting the pond edge. Both eyes swelling in several koi suggests a water problem: check ammonia, pH and oxygen, especially after heavy rain or in hot weather. Treating a pond is harder than a tank, so catch the affected koi and treat it in a separate tub where you can control dosing.
Arowana Drop Eye Is Different
Arowana keepers sometimes worry about drop eye, where the eye turns downward and looks "droopy", rather than bulging out. It's a different issue from pop eye. Keepers commonly link it to the fish constantly looking down for food, tank setup and genetics, and opinions on prevention vary. It's not an infection and is not treated with pop eye medicine. If you keep arowana, ask your seller or an experienced arowana keeper for advice.
Prevention
- Keep water clean: regular changes and a filter sized for the tank. Our cara tukar air guide covers routine.
- Use anti klorin every time; Malaysian tap water is chlorinated. Get it from water conditioners and additives.
- Smooth decor and enough open space.
- Handle gently: use a soft net or scoop fish with a container.
- Use a lid, so jumpy fish don't hit the cover or leap out.
- Quarantine new fish to keep infections out.
FAQ
Mata ikan bengkak sebelah, kenapa?
Is pop eye contagious?
The bulging itself isn't, but if it's caused by a bacterial infection or poor water, other fish in the same tank are at risk. Fix the water and watch tankmates.
Can I use aquarium salt for pop eye?
Aquarium salt may help reduce general stress, but Epsom salt is the one keepers use for swelling. Don't mix high doses of both, and avoid salt with sensitive fish such as corydoras and plecos.
Will my fish lose its eye?
In severe or untreated cases, yes. Most fish caught early keep the eye, even if it stays slightly enlarged. Fish adapt well to losing sight in one eye.
