Ikan Tak Mahu Makan? Why Fish Stop Eating & What to Do

When your ikan tak mahu makan (fish won't eat), the cause is usually one of six things: stress from a new home, poor water quality, water that's too warm, illness, the wrong food or food size, or bullying by tankmates. A new fish skipping meals for one to three days is normal. A fish that ate well yesterday and stops today is a warning sign. Start by testing the water (ammonia, nitrite, pH, temperature), because water problems are the most common hidden cause in Malaysian tanks, then work through the checklist below.

Ikan Tak Mahu Makan: Quick Checklist

Question If yes, likely cause What to do
Did the fish arrive in the last few days? Transport and new-tank stress Dim lights, wait 1–3 days, offer small amounts
Is ammonia or nitrite above zero? Water quality 30–50% water change with anti klorin
Is the water above 31°C? Heat stress, low oxygen Cool the tank, add aeration
Are there spots, rot, clamped fins or fast breathing? Illness Identify and treat
Is the food too big, or the wrong type? Food problem Try smaller or different food
Is another fish chasing it? Bullying Separate or add hides
Did you recently change food brands? Fussy eater Mix old and new food, or go back
Is a female livebearer very round? About to give birth Normal; reduce stress
Has it eaten too much recently? Overfeeding, constipation Fast 1–2 days

Cause 1: New Fish Stress

Packing, delivery and a new tank are stressful. Many fish refuse food for a day or two after arrival, especially wild-type fish, bettas, arowana and shy species.

What helps:

  • Keep the lights dim and the room quiet for the first day.
  • Offer a tiny amount of food from day 2. Remove leftovers.
  • Try the food the seller was using. Ask the seller what they fed.
  • Don't keep adding food to "tempt" the fish; it fouls the water.

If a new fish still won't eat after 4–5 days, check water and look for illness.

Cause 2: Poor Water Quality

Ammonia and nitrite make fish lethargic and suppress appetite, often before other symptoms show.

Test with a water test kit:

  • Ammonia: 0
  • Nitrite: 0
  • Nitrate: as low as possible
  • pH: stable for your species

Remember that Malaysian tap water is chlorinated and often soft with low KH, so pH can drift. Use anti klorin every time, and see our tap water guide.

If readings are off, change 30–50% of the water and feed very little until they're back to normal.

Cause 3: Heat

During Malaysian heatwaves, tanks can reach 32°C or more. Warm water holds less oxygen, and many fish (especially goldfish, koi fish and cool-water shrimp) lose their appetite.

What helps:

  • Use a fan or chiller to keep the tank under about 30°C. See our cooling guide.
  • Add an air pump.
  • Feed in the cooler morning or evening, and feed smaller amounts.

Cause 4: Illness

Loss of appetite is often the first sign of disease. Look for:

  • White spots, cotton-like tufts or a gold dust coating
  • Frayed fins
  • Rubbing against décor
  • Fast breathing or gasping
  • A swollen belly or raised scales
  • Stringy white poop (possible internal parasites)

Use our kenapa ikan mati guide to narrow it down, and treat in a hospital tank if possible.

Cause 5: Wrong Food or Food Size

Fish are surprisingly fussy.

Problem Example Fix
Pellet too big Small tetras, guppies, fry Crush flakes, use micro pellets
Wrong position in water Bottom feeders ignoring floating flakes; surface feeders ignoring sinking pellets Match food to where the fish eat
Wrong diet type Carnivores ignoring plant-based flakes Offer frozen or live food
Stale food Food open for months in a humid room Buy smaller packs, store sealed and dry
Never learned dry food Wild or farm fish raised on live food Wean gradually (below)

Browse tropical fish food for flakes and pellets in different sizes, and frozen foods for picky eaters.

Food-switching tips

  1. Start with what the fish already eats: live or frozen bloodworm, artemia or daphnia.
  2. Mix in a small amount of the new pellet or flake.
  3. Gradually increase the new food over 1–2 weeks.
  4. Soaking pellets in thawed frozen-food juice can make them more attractive.
  5. Feed a little hungrier: skip a day before offering the new food.

Humid Malaysian air makes dry food go soft and stale quickly. Close the container tightly and store it away from the tank lid and sunlight.

Cause 6: Bullying and Competition

Shy fish may stop eating if faster or aggressive tankmates eat everything first, or chase them away.

  • Watch feeding time closely.
  • Add hides, plants or driftwood.
  • Feed in two spots at once.
  • Separate aggressive fish if needed.

Species-Specific Notes

  • Ikan laga (betta): bettas often refuse food after moving, or if water is too cool in an aircond room. Try frozen bloodworm. See our betta care guide.
  • Goldfish: usually eat anything. A goldfish not eating is often a water or oxygen problem.
  • Koi fish: appetite drops in very hot weather and after heavy rain changes water conditions. Check oxygen and pH.
  • Arowana: can be picky after moving or when stressed, and may refuse a new food for days. Keep conditions calm and stable.
  • Pregnant livebearers: a heavily pregnant guppy or molly may eat less just before giving birth.

How Long Can Fish Go Without Eating?

Healthy adult fish can usually go several days without food, and many can go a week or more. That's why skipping a day or two while you sort out water quality is safe. Fry and very small fish need food more often. The real danger is not the missed meals, but whatever caused the fish to stop eating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kenapa ikan tak mahu makan selepas tukar air?

My new fish isn't eating. Should I worry? Not for the first one to three days. Keep the tank calm and offer small amounts. If it still won't eat after four or five days, test the water and check for illness.

Why does my fish spit out food? The food may be too big, stale, or not to its taste. It can also be a sign of mouth or gill problems. Try a smaller, fresher food first.
