Rak Akuarium & Kabinet: Choosing an Aquarium Stand That Can Hold the Weight

A rak akuarium (aquarium stand) or kabinet akuarium has to hold far more than people expect: a filled 2 kaki tank weighs around 80–100 kg, a 3 kaki tank about 230–260 kg, and a 4 kaki tank over 300 kg. Choose a stand built for your tank's exact footprint and weight, put it on a level, solid floor, and pick materials that survive Malaysian humidity and the odd spill. A normal TV console or bookshelf is not built for that load. This guide gives you the real numbers and a checklist so your tank doesn't crack, lean or sag.

How Heavy Is a Filled Aquarium?

Water weighs about 1 kg per litre. Add glass, substrate, rocks and equipment, and the total climbs fast.

Tank (kaki) Typical size (cm) Water (approx.) Total with glass, gravel, rocks*
1 kaki 30 × 20 × 25 ~12–15 kg ~20–25 kg
2 kaki 60 × 30 × 36 ~55–65 kg ~80–100 kg
3 kaki 90 × 45 × 45 ~155–180 kg ~230–260 kg
4 kaki 120 × 45 × 50 ~230–270 kg ~320–380 kg
6 kaki (arowana) 180 × 60 × 60 ~550–650 kg ~750–900 kg

*Rough estimates. Thick glass, a sump or lots of rock add more. For litres by size, see our tank size guide.

In other words, a 3 kaki tank weighs about the same as three or four adults standing on one small rectangle, all day, every day.

Rak Akuarium vs Kabinet: Which Type?

Type Pros Cons Best for
Open steel stand (rak besi) Strong, cheap, easy airflow Can rust; looks plain; equipment on show Fish rooms, breeders, multi-tier racks
Aluminium profile stand Light, doesn't rust, modern look Costs more; check load rating Planted and rimless tanks
Wooden cabinet (solid wood / plywood) Hides equipment, looks like furniture Must be sealed against water Living room display tanks
MDF / particle-board cabinet Cheap, looks neat Swells and weakens when wet Small tanks only, if well sealed
Tank + cabinet set Made to match, footprint correct Less choice of tank Beginners wanting a full setup

Rak Akuarium 2 Kaki: What to Look For

The 2 kaki tank is the most popular size, so it has the widest choice of stands. Check:

  • Top size matches the tank exactly, or is slightly bigger. The tank's base must never overhang the edge.
  • Load rating of at least 120 kg for comfort, more if you add a sump.
  • Height: around 70–80 cm puts the tank at a comfortable viewing height when sitting.
  • Space underneath for a canister filter, air pump and anti klorin bottle.
  • Cable access at the back.

Level Floors and Level Stands

An uneven stand puts stress on one corner of the glass, which is how silicone seams fail.

  1. Place a spirit level on the stand top, front-to-back and side-to-side.
  2. Fix the stand first (adjustable feet or shims under the stand), never by shimming the tank itself.
  3. Recheck after filling with a little water, since floor tiles and carpet can compress.
  4. For rimless tanks, many makers recommend a thin leveling mat between tank and stand. For framed (rimmed) tanks, follow the maker's instructions. Some should rest only on the frame.

Old terrace houses often have slightly sloping floors near the back door or kitchen. Check before you choose the spot.

Condo and Apartment Considerations

  • Small tanks (1–3 kaki) are generally fine on residential floors. Place them against a wall, preferably a load-bearing wall, rather than in the middle of a room.
  • Big tanks (5–6 kaki and up) can put close to a tonne on a small patch of floor. Check with your building management, and consider asking a qualified engineer before installing one, especially upstairs.
  • Spread the load: a stand with a full base or wide feet is better than four thin legs.
  • Plan for the path in: lifts, staircases and doors. A 4 kaki tank and cabinet may not fit through a narrow corridor.
  • Think about leaks: a burst seam upstairs damages your neighbour's ceiling. Use a drip tray or waterproof mat under the stand if you're worried.

Humidity, Spills and Rust: Making It Last in Malaysia

Malaysian air is humid all year, and aquariums add more moisture. Water drips during every tukar air.

  • Seal wooden cabinets with waterproof paint or varnish, inside and out, including the top and edges.
  • Avoid raw MDF or chipboard for anything larger than a small tank. Once it swells, it loses strength and it can't be fixed.
  • Steel stands: pick powder-coated or galvanised ones. Touch up chips with paint before rust spreads.
  • Ventilate the cabinet. A closed cabinet with a warm canister filter and no airflow gets damp and mouldy. Leave the back open or drill vent holes.
  • Wipe spills straight away, especially on the top surface under the tank.
  • Keep power sockets above floor level and use drip loops on all cables.

Before You Buy: Stand Checklist

  1. Measure the tank's base, not just its nominal size.
  2. Confirm the stand's load rating and material.
  3. Check the floor is level and solid.
  4. Place it away from direct sunlight to reduce algae and heat.
  5. Leave 10–15 cm behind for cables, filter hoses and maintenance.
  6. Plan power sockets nearby; avoid long extension cords on the floor.
  7. Think about future upgrades. Buying a stand for 3 kaki now may save money later.

FAQ

Is a wooden kabinet akuarium safe?

Yes, if it is built from solid wood or plywood, properly sealed, and rated for the weight. Unsealed MDF is the main thing to avoid for larger tanks.

Can I put a big aquarium in my condo?

Small and medium tanks are usually fine against a wall. For 5–6 kaki tanks, check with building management and consider a professional opinion on floor load first.

Why is my cabinet door swelling?

Water from spills or humidity is getting into the board. Dry it out, seal all surfaces, ventilate the cabinet and wipe drips after every water change.
