Lampu Akuarium LED: Choosing an Aquarium Light and How Many Hours to Run It
A good lampu akuarium LED should be about the same length as your tank (60 cm light for a 2 kaki tank, 90 cm for 3 kaki), have a colour mix that suits what you keep, and run for about 6–8 hours a day on a timer. For fish-only tanks, almost any decent LED works. Planted tanks need stronger, full-spectrum lights. Most algae problems in Malaysian tanks come from lights left on too long, or sunlight hitting the tank, not from the light itself. This guide covers sizes, colours, hours and heat.
Why Choose LED?
LEDs have replaced fluorescent tubes in most aquariums because they:
- Use less electricity, which matters with lights on every day
- Run cooler than old fluorescent or metal halide lights, though not cold
- Last longer (often several years)
- Allow colour control, dimming and built-in timers on many models
- Are slim, sitting on the rim or on brackets

Lampu Akuarium LED Size by Tank Kaki
| Tank | Dimensions (approx.) | Light length | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kaki | 30 cm | 20–30 cm clip-on or mini LED | Betta, shrimp, nano |
| 1.5 kaki | 45 cm | 40–45 cm | Small community |
| 2 kaki | 60 cm | 50–60 cm | Beginner community, light plants |
| 3 kaki | 90 cm | 80–90 cm | Community, angelfish, planted |
| 4 kaki | 120 cm | 100–120 cm, or two units | Arowana, big community, planted |
| 5–6 kaki | 150–180 cm | Two or more units | Arowana and display tanks |
Many LED bars have extendable brackets, so check the minimum and maximum bracket length against your tank's outer width, including the glass. For tanks deeper than about 50 cm, choose a brighter light, because light weakens as it passes through water.

White, RGB or Blue: Which Colour?
| Light type | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| White (daylight, 6,500–8,000K) | Natural, bright | General fish tanks, plants |
| White + blue | Crisp, cool look | Community tanks, cichlids |
| RGB / full spectrum | Rich reds and greens, "pop" colours | Planted tanks, colourful fish |
| Red-enhanced / arowana lights | Warm, red-boosting tone | Red arowana, goldfish, koi-style colour |
| Blue only (moonlight) | Dim blue glow | Night viewing only; not for plants |
Points to remember:
- Kelvin (K) describes colour tone. Around 6,500K looks like daylight, higher values look bluer.
- RGB lights make fish colours richer but can look odd if set too purple. Adjustable models let you tone it down.
- Plants grow best under full-spectrum or RGB lights. If you have live plants, read our planted tank lighting guide.
Lampu Akuarium Berapa Jam? (Photoperiod)
| Tank type | Hours per day |
|---|---|
| Fish only, no live plants | 6–8 hours (just for viewing) |
| Low-tech planted (no CO2) | 6–7 hours |
| High-tech planted (CO2 + fertiliser) | 7–8 hours |
| New tank (first 4–6 weeks) | 5–6 hours, raise slowly |
| Algae outbreak | Cut to 5–6 hours while fixing the cause |
Fish need darkness to rest. Leaving lights on 12 hours or more stresses fish and almost guarantees algae.
Use a timer
An automatic timer is the single best accessory for an aquarium light. It keeps the photoperiod the same every day, even when you go balik kampung. Many LED models have built-in timers, and plug-in timers are cheap. Look under Lighting Accessories.
Tip: set the lights to come on when you're home, for example 2 pm to 9 pm, so you actually see the tank.
Avoiding Algae
Algae needs light plus nutrients. Common causes in Malaysia:
- Direct sunlight from a window, which is far stronger than any aquarium light
- Lights on too long, or switched on and off irregularly
- Too-strong lights for a fish-only tank
- Excess nutrients from overfeeding and infrequent water changes
What to do:
- Move the tank out of direct sun, or close the curtains on that side.
- Use a timer and cut to 6 hours.
- Do regular water changes, and feed less.
- Add live plants or fast-growing floating plants to compete for nutrients.
- Add algae-eating snails or fish suited to your tank.

Heat From Lights in Malaysian Tanks
LEDs are cooler than old lights, but a powerful fixture sitting on a closed lid can still warm a tank by 1–2°C. In a room already at 30°C, that matters.
- Raise the light on legs or brackets so air can circulate.
- Leave the lid partly open, or use a mesh cover.
- Run the photoperiod in the evening, when the room is cooler.
- On very hot days, shorten the light period.

Safety and Moisture
- Choose lights with a waterproof rating (e.g. IP67 or IP68) if they sit near water.
- Keep the power adaptor away from splashes, and make a drip loop in the cable so water can't run down into the socket.
- Wipe salt or calcium crust off the light cover regularly, or it dims the light.
- If a light flickers or shows water inside, unplug it and replace it.
Choosing a Light: Checklist
- Tank length and depth: match the light and bracket size.
- Live plants or not: fish-only can use basic white; plants need full spectrum.
- Fish colour: RGB or red-enhanced lights for arowana and goldfish.
- Control: built-in timer, dimmer or app control.
- Waterproofing and warranty: check each listing, and ask the seller.
- Real photos: listings showing the light on a tank help you judge brightness and colour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Lampu akuarium perlu buka berapa jam sehari?
Ukur lebar luar tangki termasuk kaca sebelum membeli.
Does an aquarium light make algae grow?
Light helps algae grow, but the main causes are too many hours, sunlight and excess nutrients. A timer and regular water changes fix most cases.
Is a blue light bad for fish at night?
Dim blue "moonlight" for a short time is fine for viewing, but fish still need real darkness overnight. Don't leave it on all night.
Do I need a special light for live plants?
Yes, for most plants. A full-spectrum or RGB LED designed for plants gives better growth than a basic fish-viewing light.
