Product Description

Macrostoma Male (IB109) – Detailed Product Description
Species Overview

The Macrostoma Male (IB109) (Betta macrostoma) is a rare wild betta native to Borneo, Indonesia. This particular locality, known as “Spade Tail,” is prized for its distinct tail shape, natural coloration, and preservation of wild genetics. Unlike ornamental bettas, Macrostoma retains its wild behavior, compact body form, and authentic fin structure, making it highly sought-after by collectors.
It is ideal for blackwater or softwater aquariums with biotope-style aquascaping.

🌟Appearance & Coloration
Unique spade-shaped tail, distinguishing it from other Macrostoma strains
Deep red to reddish-brown body coloration
Subtle iridescent highlights along fins and body
Rounded fins and streamlined wild-type body
Adult size: 4–6 cm
Color intensity enhanced in soft, slightly acidic blackwater conditions
This combination of tail shape and vivid coloration makes it a true centerpiece for planted or blackwater setups.

🌟Temperament & Behavior
Peaceful overall, but males are territorial during breeding
Male is a paternal mouthbrooder, carrying eggs until fry hatch
Active mid- to lower-water swimmer
Prefers shaded areas, driftwood, and dense plants
Best kept in species-only tanks or with carefully selected peaceful tank mates

🌟Tank Requirements
Minimum tank size: 20–30 liters (5–8 gallons) for a single fish
Gentle filtration recommended (sponge filter preferred)
Low water flow to mimic natural blackwater habitats
Dense plants, driftwood, and leaf litter for hiding spots
Secure lid required (bettas are jumpers)

🌟Water Conditions
Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
pH: 4.5–6.5
Hardness: Very soft to soft
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: <20 ppm
Regular small water changes (10–20% weekly) help maintain optimal water quality and color intensity.

🌟Aquascaping Recommendations
Dark substrate enhances natural coloration
Driftwood, leaf litter, and Indian almond leaves for tannin-rich blackwater
Floating plants provide shaded areas to reduce stress
Dense planting encourages natural behavior and breeding

🌟Feeding Habit & Diet
Macrostoma Male is carnivorous:
Live or frozen brine shrimp
Daphnia
Bloodworms (moderation)
High-quality micro pellets for bettas
Feed small portions 1–2 times daily and remove uneaten food to maintain water quality.

🌟Tank Mates & Compatibility
Best kept in species-only tanks
Can coexist with small, peaceful softwater fish in heavily planted tanks
Avoid aggressive, large, or fin-nipping species
Male territoriality increases during breeding

🌟Breeding Information
Male is a paternal mouthbrooder
Eggs incubate in male’s mouth for 10–14 days
Soft, acidic water increases breeding success
Fry require infusoria or microworms in early stages
Breeding this species preserves wild genetics and is rewarding for experienced aquarists.

🌟Care & Maintenance
Intermediate care level
Maintain stable water and soft, slightly acidic conditions
Monitor water quality regularly
Provide shaded hiding areas to reduce stress

🌟Ideal For
Wild betta collectors
Blackwater aquarium enthusiasts
Nano aquarium hobbyists
Breeders focused on preserving authentic wild genetics

🌟Why Choose Macrostoma Male (IB109) “Spade Tail”?
This rare wild betta features a unique spade-shaped tail, vivid natural coloration, and authentic wild genetics. With softwater care, gentle filtration, and blackwater-style aquascaping, it becomes a stunning centerpiece for any collector aquarium.
