Product Description

Discover the stunning Guentheri Killifish (Nothobranchius Guentheri) — a vibrant annual killifish prized for brilliant colours and unique breeding behaviour.

  • Natural Habitat & Origin: The Guentheri Killifish is a species of annual killifish native to the seasonal pools and temporary waterways of East Africa, particularly found in Tanzania and surrounding regions. In the wild, these fish inhabit shallow, ephemeral waters that completely dry up during the dry season, with eggs surviving in the mud until the rains return. This remarkable life cycle makes them a fascinating addition to any dedicated killifish enthusiast's collection, offering a truly unique window into one of nature's most extraordinary survival strategies.
  • Water Conditions: Providing the correct water parameters is absolutely critical for the long-term health and vibrancy of your Guentheri Killifish. These fish prefer soft, slightly acidic water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 being ideal. The water hardness should be kept low, ideally between 2 to 8 dGH, replicating the soft, mineral-poor conditions of their natural rainwater pools. The temperature should be maintained between 22°C and 26°C, with a stable temperature preferred; avoid sudden fluctuations as these fish are sensitive to rapid environmental changes. Regular partial water changes of approximately 20% weekly are recommended to maintain excellent water quality, as killifish are particularly susceptible to poor water conditions and the build-up of nitrogenous waste. Using a gentle sponge filter is recommended over strong power filters, as these fish prefer calm, still waters and do not tolerate strong currents.
  • Aquarium Setup: The Guentheri Killifish is best housed in a species-specific aquarium or a well-planted nano or small community tank. A tank of at least 20 litres is suitable for a small group or a single breeding pair. The ideal setup includes a dark substrate, which helps to bring out the brilliant colours of the male, along with dense planting using fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, Cabomba, or Naj
