• Water Conditions: Endler Yellow Jacket Tigers thrive in stable, well-filtered freshwater environments with a temperature range of 22–28°C (72–82°F). They prefer a slightly alkaline to neutral pH between 6.8 and 8.0, with a general hardness (GH) of 10–20 dGH and carbonate hardness (KH) of 5–15 dKH. These fish are adaptable but will show their best colours and breeding behaviour when water parameters remain consistent. Regular weekly water changes of 20–25% are essential to keep nitrate levels below 20 ppm and to maintain excellent water quality. A gentle to moderate water flow is ideal, mimicking their natural slow-moving streams and shallow pools in Venezuela. Avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature or chemistry, as this can stress the fish and make them susceptible to disease. Using a reliable heater and thermometer in cooler climates is recommended to maintain a steady tropical environment, while a sponge filter or a low-flow hang-on-back filter will provide both biological filtration and a safe habitat for any fry produced.
• Tank Mates: Endler Yellow Jacket Tigers are peaceful, sociable micro-livebearers that cohabit beautifully with a range of small, non-aggressive species. Ideal tank mates include other Endler varieties, such as the Black Bar, Cobra, or Scarlet Endlers, as well as small tetras like Ember Tetras or Green Neon Tetras, tiny rasboras such as Chili or Phoenix Rasboras, and peaceful dwarf shrimp like Cherry or Crystal Shrimp. They also do well with other gentle bottom dwellers, including Pygmy Corydoras and Otocinclus catfish. Because of their small size (typically reaching only 2.5–3.5 cm), they should never be housed with large, predatory fish, fin-nippers, or boisterous species like barbs or cichlids. A single-sex group or a ratio of one male to two or three females is recommended to prevent excessive male harassment and to encourage natural social behaviour. In a densely planted tank, they will feel secure and display their most vibrant colours, making them an excellent centrepiece for a nano community aquarium.
• Feeding Habits: In the wild, Endler Yellow Jacket Tigers are omnivorous micro-feeders, grazing continuously on algae, biofilm, tiny invertebrates, and detritus. In the home aquarium, they will eagerly accept a wide variety of high-quality foods. Offer a staple diet of finely crushed flake food or micro-pellets designed for nano fish, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and micro worms to enhance their colouration and promote robust health. They are also fond of blanched vegetables like spinach, zucchini, and peas, as well as high-quality spirulina flakes, which mimic their natural plant-based intake. Feed small portions two to three times a day, ensuring that all food is consumed within two minutes to prevent overfeeding and water pollution. Because they are constant grazers, providing a tank with natural algae growth or a supplemental grazing surface will help satisfy their foraging instincts. A varied diet is crucial for maintaining vibrant yellow and black tiger patterning, excellent fin condition, and maximum fecundity.
• Care Requirements: Endler Yellow Jacket Tigers are exceptionally hardy and undemanding, making them an outstanding choice for both beginners and experienced keepers alike. A minimum tank size of 20 litres (5.5 gallons) is suitable for a small group, though larger volumes of 40 litres or more are recommended for a thriving colony. Dense planting with fine-leaved species such as Java moss, Cabomba, or Hornwort provides both cover and a safe haven for fry, as adult Endlers do not typically predate on their young if well-fed and given ample hiding spots. They are prolific breeders — females can produce a brood of 10–30 fry every 25–30 days — so a moss-rich environment will naturally raise survival rates. Regular tank maintenance, including substrate vacuuming and filter cleaning, will keep the aquarium healthy and these fish glowing. As tropical fish, they do not require a brackish environment, though adding a small amount of aquarium salt (at a concentration of 1 tablespoon per 20 litres) can improve their resilience against common parasitic infections. Monitor their behaviour daily; healthy fish are constantly active, outgoing, and display full colouration, while lethargy or clamped fins indicate a need for water quality checks or a review of the feeding regime.
