The pH should be slightly acidic to neutral, ideally 6.5 to 7.5, with soft to medium hardness (dGH 2–10). Sudden fluctuations in temperature or pH can stress your betta and lead to illness, so regular testing and gradual water changes are essential. A gentle, low-flow filter is best—bettas are not strong swimmers and can become exhausted in strong currents. Use a sponge filter or baffle the filter outlet. Keep the water clean with weekly 25–50% water changes, depending on tank size and stocking. Indian almond leaves can be added to release tannins, which mimic their natural habitat, lower pH slightly, and have antibacterial properties.
