Protopterus aethiopicus, the East African Lungfish, is a prehistoric oddball with lungs and fins—perfect for advanced aquarists seeking a rare, hardy giant.

🐉 Protopterus aethiopicus – Product Description

The East African Lungfish (Protopterus aethiopicus) is a living fossil, an ancient species that hasn't changed much in over 400 million years. Native to slow-moving rivers, swamps, and floodplains across East and Central Africa, this lungfish is known for its unique ability to breathe air, survive droughts in mucous cocoons, and grow impressively large—reaching up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) or more in captivity.

With a long, eel-like body, mottled gray-brown coloration, and lobe-finned limbs that resemble primitive legs, Protopterus aethiopicus is not your average aquarium fish. It’s a solitary, hardy, and highly intelligent species best kept by experienced hobbyists in a species-only tank.

🌊 Water Conditions

  • Temperature: 75–86°F (24–30°C)

  • pH Range: 6.0 – 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (3–12 dGH)

  • Tank Size: Minimum 180 gallons for juveniles; much larger for adults

  • Water Movement: Low to moderate flow mimicking stagnant or slow-moving waters

  • Oxygenation: Lungfish breathe atmospheric air—ensure tank has a secure but ventilated lid

  • Substrate & Decor: Sand or fine gravel substrate; driftwood, large rocks, and hiding areas

  • Filtration: Powerful filtration is required, but water movement should not be strong

  • Water Changes: Weekly 30–40% water changes to maintain quality

🍽️ Feeding Habits

  • Diet: Obligate carnivore and scavenger

    • Eats live or frozen foods like fish, shrimp, mussels, earthworms, and carnivore pellets

    • Can accept meaty chunks (e.g., tilapia fillet, chicken heart)

    • Feeds slowly and methodically using suction

  • Feeding Frequency: Every other day for juveniles; 2–3 times weekly for adults

  • Feeding Tips: Use tongs to offer food; remove uneaten portions to maintain water quality

🐟 Tank Mates

  • Recommended Setup: Species-only tank is best due to its size, predatory nature, and ability to damage or eat tank mates

  • If Attempting Companions:

    • Only with very large, robust fish like large bichirs or armored catfish—but not recommended

  • Avoid:

    • All small fish, invertebrates, and slow or peaceful species

    • Fish with sharp fins that may cause internal injury if swallowed

🛠️ Care and Behavior

  • Temperament:

    • Generally slow-moving and calm, but will eat anything it can overpower

    • Nocturnal and reclusive; spends much time resting or buried

  • Behavior:

    • Can aestivate (enter dormancy) if conditions are dry or poor

    • Has primitive lungs and will come up for air regularly

    • Can live for decades in captivity with proper care

  • Handling Caution:

    • Strong jaws and a powerful bite—do not handle directly

    • Lid must be tightly secured; lungfish are known escape artists

  • Lifespan:

    • 20–30+ years with proper care
