Leopard Frog Plecos (scientific name: Peckoltia compta) are a freshwater species that go by a few additional names. Sometimes you’ll see them referred to as the L134 or Imperial Tiger Pleco (that last one can make things a bit confusing at times).

This fish is found in South America (primarily Brazil) and the largest collection of them swim in the Rio Jamaxim and Rio Tapajós tributaries. They’re quite adaptive and can thrive in waters with currents that range from slow to fast. You can usually find them on rocks using their suckermouth to look for food.

Introducing the L134 Leopard Frog Pleco, a stunning and sought-after species for aquarium enthusiasts. With its distinctive appearance and fascinating behavior, the L134 Pleco is sure to make a captivating addition to your tank. Here's everything you need to know about this beautiful fish:

  • Size: The L134 Leopard Frog Pleco typically reaches a size of 7-8cm (2.8-3.1 inches) in length when fully grown. However, it's important to note that these plecos can grow larger given proper care and a suitable environment.

  • Appearance: The L134 Pleco is known for its striking black and white coloration, resembling the markings of a leopard frog. Its body is predominantly black with white spots and lines, creating a visually striking pattern. The contrast between the colors adds to its appeal and makes it stand out in any aquarium.

  • Care Requirements: The L134 Leopard Frog Pleco requires a well-maintained aquarium to thrive. Provide them with a tank that has ample hiding places such as caves, driftwood, and rock formations. These plecos appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water, so regular water changes and filtration are essential. Maintain a temperature range of 24-28°C (75-82°F) and a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5.

  • Diet: L134 Plecos are primarily omnivorous and have a varied diet. Offer them high-quality sinking pellets or wafers specifically formulated for plecos. Supplement their diet with fresh vegetables like zucchini, spinach, and cucumber. They will also graze on algae and biofilm in the tank. Occasional protein-rich foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp can be provided as treats.

  • Tank Mates: The L134 Leopard Frog Pleco is generally peaceful and can coexist with other peaceful community fish. However, it's important to avoid keeping them with aggressive or fin-nipping species. Good tank mates include tetras, peaceful cichlids, rasboras, and other pleco species. Providing ample hiding places and territories can help reduce potential conflicts.

  • Breeding: Breeding L134 Plecos can be challenging, but it is possible with the right conditions. Provide them with caves or PVC pipes as spawning sites. Increase the water temperature to around 28-30°C (82-86°F) and perform regular water changes to simulate the rainy season. The male will guard the eggs until they hatch, and the fry can be fed with specialized fry food or powdered flake food.

  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial for the health of L134 Plecos. Perform regular water changes of 20-30% every week to maintain water quality. Keep an eye on the water parameters, including ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Clean the glass and decorations using a gentle sponge or soft brush, avoiding harsh chemicals that can harm the fish.

The L134 Leopard Frog Pleco is a captivating and beautiful fish that will surely become the centerpiece of your aquarium. With its unique coloration and peaceful nature, it is a delight to observe. By providing them with a suitable environment, a balanced diet, and proper care, you can enjoy the beauty of these plecos for years to come.
