Product Details

  • Monitors the water values in aquariums simply and reliably. Determines: pH value, carbonate hardness, nitrite, nitrate and ammonium/ammonia, as well as CO2 calculation using the table
  • Easy to use: add aquarium water to cuvette with syringe, add indicator and compare colour on colour scale, or count drops until colour changes in KH test
  • Comparator system takes the inherent water colouring into account. CO2-content is determined by pH value and KH value using the table
  • Childproof reagent bottles, waterproof plastic case, refill reagents separately available
  • Package contents: 1 test case for aquariums, 9 reagents, 3 glass vials, syringe, measuring spoon, comparator block, colour charts, report sheets, operating instructions

Healthy aquariums with conditions close to nature

The right water values are dependent on the fish stock and the plants in the aquarium. Even if the water looks clear it can be contaminated. Bad values can cause diseases or algae in the aquarium. To maintain a healthy aquarium with conditions close to nature it is important to check and adapt the water values regularly. With JBL water tests you can determine all relevant water values quickly, easily and very precisely.

The following tests are available:

pH test: acidity of the water from 3.0 to 10

pH test: acidity of the water from 6.0 to 7.6

pH test: acidity of the water from 7.4 to 9.0

O2 test: determination of the oxygen content

CO2 test: determination of the carbon dioxide content for thriving plant growth

GH test: determination of general hardness

KH test: pH stability of the water (carbonate hardness)

PO4 test: determination of the phosphate content (reason for algae growth and plant nutrient)

Test NH4 / NH3: indication of non-toxic ammonium, determination of the toxic ammonia using table

NO2 test: determination of nitrogen compound nitrite, which is toxic for the fish

NO3-Test: determination of the nitrate content (reason for algae growth and plant nutrient)

Fe test: determination of the iron content to monitor the fertilisation

Cu Test: heavy metal deadly for invertebrates. Also important for adjusting the therapeutic dose of medications

SiO2 test: determination of the silicates (silicic acid) as cause for diatoms

To determine the CO2 content you just need to measure the pH and KH values. From both values arises the CO2 content in the water, which then can be referenced from the enclosed table.

With our research department and our worldwide expeditions into the habitats of the animals we permanently set new standards with our product innovations.

FAQ

Where can I find the record sheets for the documentation of my water analysis?

Have you lost your record sheets, used them all up, or need them in another language?

In the appendix of this FAQ you will find PDF files for printing them out in German, English and French.

ProAquaTest-Protokoll-Analyse.pdf

I have lost my colour chart. Can I download the colour chart for the test?

The colour cards are not available for download on the JBL website. The absolutely accurate colour reproduction that is required can only be achieved using a printer which can be re-calibrated before each printout. Most privately used printers are not accurate enough for this.

You will find the colour chart bundle as a spare part on the respective product page and in the spare parts shop under: https://www.jbl.de/en/products/detail/8732/jbl-proaquatest-assortiment-color-chart

Why are there no colour charts for GH. KH, Mg /Ca saltwater and CO2 direct?

The tests from the test range: JBL GH test, JBL KH test, JBL calcium test Ca and JBL magnesium test Mg, where the number of drops are counted until the colour changes and the counted value is multiplied by a value:

GH = number of drops = general hardness in °dH

KH = number of drops = carbonate hardness in °dH

CO2 = number of drops * 2 = CO2 in mg/l

Magnesium + calcium = number of drops * 120 = amount Ca + Mg in mg/l

Calcium = number of drops * 20 = amount Ca in mg/l

Magnesium = amount Ca+Mg from magnesium test - amount Ca in mg/l = magnesium in mg/l

What can I do when the measured value of a water test falls outside the scale?

If one of your measurements reaches the end of the colour chart scale you can multiply the scale, by diluting the following tests with distilled water (e.g. JBL Dest).

Here’s how to do it: dilute the sample with distilled water and carry out the test once more.

Her’s how in greater detail:

JBL GH test kit: Instead of 5 ml use 10 ml aquarium water. Now 1 drop is equivalent to 0.5 dGH.

JBL KH test kit: Instead of 5 ml use 10 ml aquarium water. Now 1 drop is equivalent to 0.5 dGH.

Note: when using 10 ml sample water the colour development is weaker with the first drops than with 5 ml sample water. Put the measuring container on a white underlay for a better readability.

JBL NH4/NH3 Ammonium/Ammonia test kit, JBL NO2 Nitrite test kit, JBL Fe Iron test kit and JBL Cu Copper test kit:

2.5 ml sample + 2.5 ml dist. water: result times 2

1 ml sample + 4 ml dist. water: result times 5

0.5 ml sample + 4.5 ml dist. water: result times 10

NO3 Nitrate test kit, JBL SiO2 Silicate test kit, JBL PO4 Phosphate sensitive test kit and JBL Mg Magnesium test kit freshwater:

5 ml sample + 5 ml dist. water: result X 2

2 ml sample + 8 ml dist. water: result X 5

1 ml sample + 9 ml dist. water: result X 10

JBL PO4 Phosphate test kit koi high range:

2.5 ml sample + 2.5 ml dist. water: result X 2

1 ml sample + 4 ml dist. water: result X 5

JBL K Kalium test kit:

7.5 ml sample + 7.5 ml dist. water: result X 2

3 ml sample + 12 ml dist. water: result X 5

1.5 ml sample + 13.5 ml dist. water: result X 10

JBL CO2 direct test kit, JBL Ca Calcium test kit and JBL Mg+Ca Magnesium+Calcium test kit:

not required

The instructions point out that the comparator block should be used to compare the colours. Can this be done without the comparator block as well ? Or is there a factor from this comparison that is required for the measurement ?

The colour charts are intended to be used with the comparator block. In addition, when the comparator block is used with the blank water sample, this compensates the inherent water colour.

Therefore, if the comparator block is not used, there will most likely be deviations in the readings.

Do my water tests still work although they have been open for nine months?

Basically a sealed test keeps longer than an open one. How much the shelf life is reduced depends crucially on the handling and the storage conditions of the reagents. It may happen that a reagent in a test that has been open for 9 months doesn’t indicate correctly any more. However, additional information is needed to answer this question properly.
