Species and Origin: The Golden Ram is a color morph of the Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), which is native to the Orinoco River basin in South America.
Appearance: The Golden Ram has a yellow or gold coloration, often with a slight iridescence. Like the standard Blue Ram, they have a compact and laterally compressed body shape, making them visually appealing in aquariums.
Habitat: In the wild, Blue Rams inhabit slow-moving, warm waters with dense vegetation, submerged branches, and roots. In captivity, Golden Rams prefer well-planted aquariums with hiding spots.
Tank Requirements: Golden Rams require stable water conditions. Maintain a temperature between 78-85°F (25-29°C) and keep the pH slightly acidic to neutral. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a pair.
Diet: Like other Rams, Golden Rams are omnivores. Feed them a balanced diet that includes high-quality pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms.
Behavior: Golden Rams are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially during breeding. It's advisable to keep them in pairs and provide hiding spots and visual barriers to reduce aggression.
Breeding: Breeding Golden Rams can be achieved in a well-maintained aquarium. Provide flat surfaces for egg laying, and the parents will usually care for their fry. A separate breeding tank can increase the survival rate of the offspring.
