Dark Knight Rams are a manmade color strain of the ever-popular German Blue Ram. The Dark Knight Rams were developed by Danziger Discus Farms in Tel Aviv, Israel following many, many years of selective breeding.

Black Knight Rams, also known as Black Ram Cichlids or Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, are a beautiful and sought-after species of dwarf cichlid. Here's some information about Black Knight Rams:

  • Appearance: Black Knight Rams have a striking dark black coloration that covers their entire body, including their fins. This deep black coloration sets them apart from other variations of the Ram Cichlid. They have a compact and rounded body shape with vibrant red eyes, which create a stunning contrast against their black color. Male and female Black Knight Rams look similar, but males tend to have more elongated fins.

  • Size: Black Knight Rams are small fish, reaching an adult size of around 5-7 centimeters (2-2.8 inches) in length. They are considered dwarf cichlids and are suitable for smaller aquariums.

  • Behavior: Black Knight Rams are generally peaceful fish, but they can become territorial during breeding or when defending their nesting sites. They are best kept in pairs or small groups, as this allows them to establish a natural hierarchy. They can be a bit shy and may prefer hiding spots and areas with dense vegetation in the aquarium.

  • Water Parameters: Black Knight Rams prefer aquariums with stable water conditions. The ideal water temperature for them is between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius (77-84 degrees Fahrenheit). They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH level ranging from 6.0 to 7.5. The water hardness should be relatively soft, with a range of 5-12 dGH.

  • Tank Setup: Provide a well-decorated aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and caves for the Black Knight Rams to explore and establish territories. They appreciate the presence of plants, rocks, and driftwood, which mimic their natural habitat and offer hiding places. The substrate should be fine-grained and non-abrasive to protect their delicate barbels.

  • Feeding: Black Knight Rams are omnivorous and accept a variety of foods. They should be offered a balanced diet consisting of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small insect larvae. It's important to provide a varied diet to ensure optimal health and coloration.

  • Compatibility: Black Knight Rams are relatively peaceful but can be territorial during breeding. They can be kept with other peaceful community fish that share similar water requirements and temperament. Avoid keeping them with larger or more aggressive fish that may intimidate or harass them.

Black Knight Rams are known for their stunning black coloration, making them a captivating addition to freshwater aquariums. With proper care, a suitable environment, and a balanced diet, they can thrive and provide a beautiful focal point in your tank.
