Temperament
Aggressive
An amazing example of mimicry in nature, the Amazon Leaf Fish both looks and acts exactly like a dead leaf as a way to ambush its prey in the wild. When small fish venture too close, it extends its surprisingly large mouth and inhales them in one quick motion. In the aquarium, they make for an extremely unique display fish, especially in small groups. They are peaceful with nearly any fish too big to be eaten, but tankmates should be chosen carefully as fast-moving or aggressive fish can cause them stress. Although they are relatively hardy, feeding can be a challenge as they can be difficult to wean off live food fish or insects.
✦To care for an Amazon leaf fish tank, start with a tank of at least 20 gallons with a tight-fitting lid. Maintain the water temperature between 76-82°F and pH level between 6.0-7.5. Use soft, acidic water and add dried leaves and driftwood for a natural habitat. Feed them live or frozen foods like small fish, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Keep the tank well-filtered and perform regular water changes. Provide hiding spots and keep tankmates to a minimum as they are solitary and may become aggressive.
