Alligator Gar (8–10 cm) – a prehistoric predator with a long snout and armored body. Perfect for monster fish keepers with large aquariums or ponds.

The Alligator Gar (Atractosteus spatula) is an ancient and fascinating freshwater predator, often referred to as a living fossil due to its lineage dating back over 100 million years. Recognized for its elongated snout, sharp teeth, and armor-like scales, the Alligator Gar is one of the largest freshwater fish species in the world.

At 8–10 cm, these juveniles look small and manageable, but they can grow to an astonishing 150–200 cm (5–6.5 feet) or more in captivity. This species is suitable only for experienced aquarists with massive tanks or outdoor ponds, offering a true centerpiece for monster fish setups.

Care Guide for Alligator Gar

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 1,200 liters (300 gallons) for juveniles; much larger for adults

  • Aquascape: Open swimming space with minimal sharp decorations

  • Filtration: Extremely powerful filtration (sump or large canister) for heavy bioload

  • Lighting: Moderate

  • Lid Required: Heavy, secure lid to prevent escapes

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22°C – 28°C (72°F – 82°F)

  • pH Level: 6.5 – 7.8

  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

  • Maintenance: Weekly 30–40% water changes for pristine conditions

Feeding Habits

Alligator Gar are carnivorous ambush predators with strong feeding instincts.

  • Recommended Diet:

    • Fresh or frozen fish fillets

    • Shrimp and prawns

    • Pellets for large carnivorous fish (as they adapt)

Feed once daily for juveniles; reduce frequency as they grow larger. Avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality.

Tank Mates

Due to their predatory size and strength, tank mates must be large and equally robust.

Suitable Tank Mates:

  • Arowanas

  • Pacu

  • Giant Catfish species (Pimelodids, Doradids)

  • Large Cichlids (Oscar, Peacock Bass)

Avoid small or medium fish—they will be eaten.
