Acanthicus adonis, commonly known as the Adonis Pleco or L155, is a large and striking species of catfish belonging to the Loricariidae family. This fish is native to South America, specifically found in the Amazon River basin and its surrounding tributaries. The Adonis Pleco is highly admired in the aquarium hobby for its impressive size, unique appearance, and distinctive coloration.
Appearance:
- Size: Acanthicus adonis is a large pleco species and can reach a substantial size of up to 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 centimeters) in length in the wild. In aquariums, they typically grow to around 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 centimeters) in length.
- Coloration: The Adonis Pleco displays a striking and eye-catching color pattern. Its body is primarily dark brown or black with numerous bright white or yellowish spots or flecks covering the entire body. The spots form a beautiful contrast against the dark background, giving it a unique appearance.
Water Conditions:
- Temperature: Maintain a tropical water temperature between 74°F and 82°F (23°C to 28°C).
- pH Level: Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH level between 6.5 and 7.5 to replicate their natural habitat.
- Water Hardness: Provide moderately soft to moderately hard water with a hardness level between 4 and 15 dGH.
Tank Setup:
- Tank Size: Due to their large size, the Adonis Pleco requires a spacious aquarium of at least 200 gallons (757 liters) to accommodate their growth and swimming needs.
- Substrate and Hiding Places: Use a soft and fine-grained substrate to prevent damage to their delicate barbels. Include caves, driftwood, and rocky hiding spots to provide them with shelter and a sense of security.
Feeding Habit:
- Omnivorous Diet: Acanthicus adonis is an omnivore and will accept a variety of foods.
- High-Quality Sinking Pellets and Fresh Vegetables: Offer high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and occasional fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber.
Behavior:
- Solitary and Territorial: Adonis Plecos are generally solitary and territorial fish, so it's best to keep them alone or in large, well-spaced aquariums with plenty of hiding spots.
- Nocturnal: They are primarily active during the night, so providing dim lighting during the day is beneficial.
Care:
- Due to their large size and territorial nature, providing adequate space and hiding spots is essential to reduce stress.
- Maintain excellent water quality through regular water changes and efficient filtration.
- Always ensure that the tank is securely covered as they are known to be skilled jumpers.
